Malala Yousafzai’s husband is Asser Malik, a Pakistani cricket and sports-industry professional. Yousafzai announced the marriage on November 9, 2021, describing a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with their families. Most of what is publicly reported about Malik dates from that announcement week, so the details below separate what the 2021 coverage said from what is still unverified in 2026.
The marriage announcement
Yousafzai announced the marriage on November 9, 2021. ABC News Australia reported the same ceremony in Birmingham and reproduced her announcement. The Guardian quoted her post directly:
“Today marks a precious day in my life. Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life. We celebrated a small nikkah [Islamic marriage contract] ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families. Please send us your prayers. We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead.”
The announcement is the primary source for the wedding itself. It describes a religious ceremony and does not describe any civil registration, so this article does not address the legal status of the marriage.

Who is Asser Malik?
Malik is a cricket professional, and the public record about him is mostly career reporting from November 2021. Coverage at that time was consistent on his occupation but thin on personal background.
Cricket career as reported in 2021
The Indian Express described Malik as the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) general manager for high performance in its November 10, 2021 coverage. The same reporting said that, based on interviews with cricket administrators, he had earlier worked with the amateur cricket league Last Man Stands, on grassroots cricket development in southern Punjab, and with the Multan Sultans franchise.
These are historical details. The 2021 reporting does not establish whether Malik still holds the PCB role, and nothing reviewed here confirms his current employment in 2026. If you are citing his job title, attribute it to the 2021 coverage and state the date.
Education
The Washington Post reported that Malik attended Aitchison College in Lahore and graduated in 2012 from the Lahore University of Management Sciences with a degree in economics and political science. The Indian Express also reported his studies at Aitchison College and Lahore University, without adding a separate graduation account.

What is not established
The reporting does not establish his exact age, family background, net worth, or the length and circumstances of the couple’s relationship. Articles that state these details are going beyond the available evidence.
How Malala has described her decision
In a 2025 interview with Marie Claire, Yousafzai reflected on her earlier skepticism about marriage. She said that seeing girls married as children or forced into marriage, and seeing women make unequal compromises, had led her to wonder whether marriage would cost her part of her future. Her account is that she changed her mind after falling in love and came to see marriage as a mutual agreement between two people who want to spend their lives together.
Rank #4
“If I hadn’t fallen in love, I would have not considered marriage at all. But in the end, I decided to marry because I understood that it’s about mutual agreement between two people who want to spend the rest of their lives together. That’s the most important thing.”
She also said in the same interview: “Sometimes people don’t expect me to be romantic. But I am a very romantic person.”

What readers should take from the record
- Malala Yousafzai married Asser Malik in a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham, announced on November 9, 2021.
- The 2021 coverage identified Malik as the PCB’s general manager for high performance and described earlier amateur and grassroots cricket work. Treat that as a 2021 description, not a current title.
- Yousafzai’s explanation of why she chose marriage comes from her own 2025 interview and describes her reasoning, not Malik’s.
- Claims about Malik’s private life, wealth, or the couple’s history beyond the announcement are not supported by the public reporting.
Further reading on Yousafzai
For background on Yousafzai’s life and advocacy, which the wedding coverage does not address, her memoir I Am Malala (2019, per The Guardian) is the standard starting point. It does not discuss Malik.
