When does Luke learn who his father is?
The revelation happens in The Empire Strikes Back, Episode V. On Cloud City, after luring Luke into a trap, Vader tries to persuade him to join the dark side and tells him, “No, I am your father.” The StarWars.com 40th-anniversary account describes the reveal during their Cloud City confrontation.
The familiar version “Luke, I am your father” is not the wording quoted in the official StarWars.com sources. Vader’s line is “No, I am your father.”

Why did Obi-Wan say Vader killed Luke’s father?
In A New Hope, Obi-Wan tells Luke that Darth Vader betrayed and murdered Luke’s father. That account is misleading: the later reveal shows that Vader himself is Luke’s father. The Luke Skywalker Databank describes Obi-Wan’s earlier explanation and the truth Luke discovers afterward.
Does Yoda confirm the reveal?
Yes. In Return of the Jedi, Yoda confirms to Luke that Vader is his true father. That confirmation follows the Cloud City revelation in The Empire Strikes Back. StarWars.com’s Luke Skywalker Databank recounts the confirmation.

How was the twist kept secret during filming?
George Lucas said he kept the reveal out of the scripts and story treatments and told Mark Hamill the truth on the day the scene was filmed, so Hamill could react appropriately. In a 2020 StarWars.com interview, Lucas recalled, “I didn’t tell anybody — anybody — about it.”
Hamill later recalled that the script he and others received instead had the line, “You don’t know the truth. Obi-Wan killed your father.” Director Irvin Kershner told him the actual reveal shortly before filming. Hamill’s account appears in a StarWars.com interview.
