Archbishop Rino Fisichella presented her at a Holy See press conference on October 28, 2024. She is a Jubilee mascot, not a permanent emblem of the whole Church, and she is not a character from an anime series.
What Luce was created to do
The Jubilee 2025 office presented Luce as the official mascot of that Jubilee year. Its announcement, dated October 28, 2024, says the character was designed to reflect pop culture popular among young people and carries a message of hope and welcome. The stated goal was to reach younger generations and encourage dialogue between age groups, which the announcement calls intergenerational dialogue.
At the same press conference, Fisichella introduced her in plain terms: “The creative work of Simone Legno, Luce is the mascot that will accompany us.” The Holy See Press Office transcript of that event records the remark.
Why the style is described as anime
The title’s phrase “anime mascot” is a reporter’s shorthand. The official announcement describes the intended influence as pop culture in general. The Catholic Review, which covered the mascot in December 2024, explicitly calls the drawing anime-style. The accurate description is therefore anime-influenced or anime-style. Luce appears in no anime series, and nothing in the official material presents her as one.

Design and symbolism
The Jubilee announcement describes Luce as a pilgrim dressed for travel, and it assigns a meaning to each visible element:
- Yellow anorak: protection from the elements.
- Muddy boots: the road she has already travelled.
- Missionary cross: worn around her neck.
- Pilgrim’s staff: the traditional equipment of a pilgrim.
- Intensely shining eyes: hope born in a pilgrim’s heart, the desire for spirituality and connection with the divine, and the peace and brotherhood the announcement associates with the Jubilee.
The Catholic Review adds two details that the official announcement does not state. It reports that the eyes include a scallop shell, a traditional pilgrimage symbol, and that the yellow raincoat echoes the colour of the Vatican flag. Those are the newspaper’s readings, not Jubilee office statements.

Her companions
Legno says he created the dog Santino first and then added three friends to build a wider story about encounter and exchange between people from different cultures. He describes the group as a useful way to convey Christian good practices. The Catholic Review names the three friends as:
- Fe
- Xin
- Sky
The creator and his intent
Legno is an illustrator from Rome and the founder of the Tokidoki brand, a identity the Jubilee announcement does not mention but an Artribune interview published October 30, 2024 confirms. In that interview he says the Jubilee’s focus on young people led him to propose a contemporary, pop-culture character. He began with the Jubilee theme of hope and the image of light, then developed the pilgrim and her yellow raincoat as a picture of facing the storms of a journey.

The Expo 2025 Osaka connection
The Vatican transcript links Luce to the Holy See Pavilion, which was hosted inside Italy’s pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka. The Expo ran from April 13 to October 13, 2025. Luce’s role there was as the mascot for both the Jubilee and the Osaka presence, as Fisichella described it. That presence is now a past event.
How the mascot was received
Coverage of the reaction is limited. The Catholic Review interviewed three students and reported their remarks. Abigail Arhems, 19, a Towson University student preparing to travel to Rome, asked: “What is going on? Why did the Vatican make an anime?” Ian Holmes, 21, said, “The memes are good,” and described the mascot as useful for evangelisation. Ben Tarnosky, 20, said that “it’s sparking conversation.” These are three individual views from one outlet. They show that the character drew attention among young people, but they do not measure wider opinion.

Merchandise and the plush
A Corriere della Sera report dated December 19, 2024 says Simone Legno presented a Luce plush to the Pope. That confirms a physical plush was made. It does not establish whether a plush is sold today, whether it is officially licensed, or whether any seller is currently offering it. Readers looking to buy one should check the Jubilee 2025 office or the creator’s own channels before paying for a listing.
What the public record does not establish
- No audience size, sales figure or measurable reach has been published for Luce.
- No licensing arrangement or current retail availability has been verified.
- Her future use beyond the Jubilee year has not been announced in the sources reviewed.
What is established is the official role, the designer, the stated symbolism, and the press coverage from late 2024 cited above.
