Leo Bonhart is a human mercenary and bounty hunter played by Sharlto Copley. Hired to track Ciri and the outlaw gang known as the Rats, he kills the gang and captures Ciri by the season’s end. Netflix presents him as frightening not because he is a supernatural creature, but because he is patient, calculating and deliberately cruel.
Who is Leo Bonhart?
Bonhart is a feared mercenary on the Continent. Netflix describes him as methodical, ruthless and loyal to coin; he is a human antagonist, not a monster species. Producer Tomasz Bagiński calls him “one of the darkest, craziest villains of this continent.” Netflix’s Season 4 feature on Bonhart introduces him as a new threat in the story.

Sharlto Copley plays Bonhart. Netflix’s Season 4 cast guide confirms the casting and explains the mercenary’s assignment.
Why is Bonhart hunting Ciri and the Rats?
Bonhart is hired to pursue Ciri and the Rats, then deliver Ciri—who is using the name Falka—to Stefan Skellen. Copley summarizes the job this way: “He’s hired to chase after the Rats and Ciri, and Leo is hired to bring Falka to Skellen.” Skellen is an imperial fixer who works with informants and hired blades, placing Bonhart within a wider paid effort to find Ciri rather than making personal revenge his stated motive.

How does Bonhart find the Rats?
Netflix’s account of the series shows Bonhart building a trail from rumors, witness accounts and traces of the gang’s crimes. As the Rats become notorious, wanted posters and gossip help expose where they may be headed. Bonhart gets to Jealousy before them and lays a trap. The threat is his willingness to turn patience and information into an ambush, rather than simply relying on force.
Copley has said the role’s brutality was difficult to approach: “I don’t particularly enjoy playing villains, particularly if it’s this level of brutality when you’re playing against female actors,” he says. He also told Netflix, “I like to play characters that are entertaining.” Netflix’s feature reports that Copley asked for edible saliva to drool on cue and wanted Bonhart to feel more layered than a standard psychopathic villain; those details are production color from the streamer, not independent reporting.

What happens to the Rats and Ciri in the finale?
Major finale spoilers: Bonhart kills the Rats and takes Ciri captive. He spares her, but not out of kindness. In Netflix’s Season 4 ending explainer, Copley says Bonhart sees Ciri’s capacity for violence and puts her through brutality to test whether she can become the fighter he believes she could be. He regards her as a challenge and a kindred spirit, making his interest in her more disturbing than a straightforward prisoner-and-captor dynamic.
Netflix leaves Ciri’s longer-term fate unresolved. Bonhart’s intentions and the immediate outcome are established by the finale, but what Ciri does next—and whether Bonhart can shape or exploit her potential—remains open.

How does Season 4 connect to the Witcher books?
Netflix says Seasons 4 and 5 adapt Andrzej Sapkowski’s Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake. That is a multi-season adaptation scope, not a promise that every Season 4 event maps scene by scene to one novel. Readers curious about the book context can look to The Tower of the Swallow, but a detailed comparison of its Bonhart and the show’s version requires checking the relevant book text against the episodes.
Season 4 has eight episodes, and Netflix says all eight are streaming; its finale explainer says all four seasons are available on Netflix. Streaming availability can vary by territory. Netflix’s announcement about Seasons 4 and 5 confirms the adaptation scope and Copley’s casting.
