The couple wed in a private ceremony in New York in December 2012, and they have a son, Bear. Smith keeps a low public profile, so most of what is publicly known about him comes from reporting on his marriage to the actor and from his earlier work at Virgin Galactic.

Edward Abel Smith and the name Ned Rocknroll
Smith was known as Ned Rocknroll when he met and married Winslet. Later reporting identifies him by his full name, Edward Abel Smith. Winslet has explained that he chose the Rocknroll name himself and later changed it back. Readers searching for either name are looking for the same man, so the current name is Edward Abel Smith and Ned Rocknroll is the name he used at the time of the marriage.

How the couple met
Reporting places the first meeting in 2011 at Necker Island, Branson’s home in the British Virgin Islands. Contemporary coverage said a fire broke out during that visit and that Winslet helped get Branson’s mother and her children out of harm’s way. That episode is often retold as the origin of the relationship, but the reporting records it as an event during the visit rather than as the reason the couple became close. Treat it as an anecdote from the press, not a documented account from the couple.
The December 2012 wedding
The marriage was confirmed through a statement from Winslet’s spokesman, published in The Guardian on December 28, 2012. It read: “I can confirm that Kate Winslet married Ned Rocknroll in New York earlier this month in a private ceremony attended by her two children and a very few friends and family.” The statement names the groom by his former name, which is why the same person appears under two names in early coverage.

Their son and Winslet’s older children
The couple’s son, Bear, was born in 2013, according to The Guardian’s 2021 interview with Winslet. Winslet’s older children, Mia and Joe, are from her earlier marriages. Public reporting does not give a detailed account of how Smith relates to those children beyond the family setting Winslet has described.
Smith’s work: Virgin Galactic and the family role
Virgin Galactic
Contemporary reporting says Smith worked at Virgin Galactic in a marketing, promotion and astronaut-experience role. That work connected him to Branson’s company during the years the couple met and married. A 2025 Harper’s Bazaar profile reports that he no longer works there.
Winslet’s description of him at home
In her 2021 New York Times interview, reproduced by Glamour, Winslet described Smith as a stay-at-home dad. She said: “He looks after us, especially me.” That is a description by Winslet of her family arrangement in 2021, not a verified statement about his current employment, and it should not be read as a confirmed job title.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is current and what is not established
The most recent reporting available describes the couple as still married. No direct confirmation from 2026 was found, so the marriage should be read as the latest reported status rather than a newly verified fact. Smith’s current occupation is not established by the reporting reviewed. Reports about his finances, private life and day-to-day activities would go beyond what the public record supports.
Rank #3
Because Smith is a private figure, most future coverage is likely to come from Winslet’s own interviews or from profiles of the family. Readers who want the freshest status should check the most recent interview or profile from Winslet’s team rather than older articles that describe his job in the present tense.
