Spoilers for Squid Game Season 2, episode 2: Kang No-eul is a former soldier and North Korean defector, played by Park Gyu-young. Though she initially seems to be a possible contestant, the episode 2 reveal shows she is a pink guard and expert sniper. Her central personal goal is finding the child she was separated from.
Who is Kang No-eul?
Netflix’s Season 2 cast guide describes No-eul as a former soldier and North Korean defector who left family, including her daughter, behind. Park Gyu-young plays her. No-eul carries pain and guilt connected to that separation, and finding her child is the purpose that drives her.
Is No-eul a player or a guard?
No-eul is not a contestant. Season 2 deliberately makes her look like she might be one, but the ending of episode 2 reveals her as a pink guard and an expert sniper. Netflix’s ending explainer identifies the reveal and her role.
Why does No-eul join the games?
No-eul’s job in the games and her personal search are connected, but her motive should not be reduced to simple loyalty to the organization or a paycheck. In comments reported by Netflix, Park says No-eul begins the work hoping to let people who have lost hope pass peacefully and to ease the pain of people suffering as she does. That is Park’s account of the character’s inner motive; the story also establishes that No-eul is searching for her child.

In a January 17, 2025 interview with ELLE, Park discussed No-eul’s work at an amusement park before she enters the island and her effort to fund the search for her child. She also described developing the character’s history of loss and guilt with director Hwang Dong-hyuk. These details add actor-interview context to No-eul’s motivation rather than changing the episode 2 reveal.

Netflix’s Season 3 cast guide provides later-season context about No-eul and her continuing search. Treat that as information from after Season 2, not as something established by the Season 2 reveal. In Season 2, the essential facts are her guard role, her past as a soldier and defector, and her search for her child.
