On August 4, 2023, an announced giveaway of PlayStation 5 consoles and other items drew thousands to Manhattan’s Union Square, where the gathering became disorderly and caused damage. The consoles were not handed out: Cenat later told ABC News he had giveaway items but had been unable to distribute them.
Who is Kai Cenat?
Cenat built an audience through livestreams and videos that mix gaming with pranks, skits and everyday-life content. CBS New York described him in August 2023 as a streamer and YouTuber with 6.5 million Twitch followers and 3.6 million YouTube subscribers; those are dated figures, not current counts. CBS New York’s August 2023 profile gives that snapshot.
In June 2026, Axios described Cenat as Twitch’s most-followed person and reported that he teased a return of Streamer University. That report also said the program’s first edition received more than 1 million applications for about 200 places. Those figures describe the first edition, not the Union Square giveaway, and the tease does not establish the program’s current status. Axios’s June 2026 report provides that later context.
What happened at the Union Square giveaway?
On August 4, 2023, Cenat announced a giveaway that drew thousands of people to Union Square in Manhattan. Contemporary coverage said the proposed items included PS5 consoles and gift cards; CBS New York also reported PCs and $100 gift cards. The crowd grew disorderly, and reports described property damage and arrests.

The Associated Press later reported that at least four people were taken to hospitals. These are reported outcomes of the event, rather than a measure of every person in the crowd or a finding about any individual’s conduct. ABC News’s August 10 account covered Cenat’s first public comments, while the Associated Press’s May 2024 report summarized the damage, arrests and hospitalizations.
Why the announcement became a crowd-control problem
The announcement invited people to a public place without an RSVP or stated capacity system, and thousands arrived. Commenting to CBS New York, Washington Post technology columnist Taylor Lorenz said an RSVP system would be important when a creator with a huge online audience invites people to an event. Her observation was commentary on planning, not an official finding about the cause of the disorder.

What Cenat said afterward
In his first post-event Twitch comments, Cenat said the destructive behavior disappointed him and that he would arrange a future event properly. He said, “It was never my intentions for things to happen the way it happened,” ABC News reported. He also told the outlet he had giveaway items but had not been able to distribute them. Those statements describe his account; they do not independently verify what was on site or establish that the announced giveaway was completed.

The legal outcome came later, in May 2024. The Associated Press reported that charges would be dropped under an agreement requiring Cenat to apologize on social media and pay restitution. His required payment was $55,000 to Union Square Partnership for cleanup and landscaping repairs; payments by two codefendants brought the agreement’s total above $57,000.

His Snapchat apology, quoted by the AP, said: “I wanted to do something cool and fun for people and did not think it was going to turn into something that caused harm to the city, and I should have thought more about the post before I announced it.” This was a reported agreement and dismissal, not a conviction.
