JJ Maybank’s biological father is Chandler Groff, also known as Chandler Genrette. Luke Maybank raised JJ and was the father JJ believed was biologically his until the reveal in Season 4 of Outer Banks.
Who is JJ’s biological father?
Netflix’s official Season 4 ending explanation and its cast guide both confirm the family relationships. JJ’s biological mother is Larissa Genrette, and his biological father is Chandler Groff. Groff is sometimes listed under the surname Genrette. Because JJ is Larissa’s son, he is also the grandson of Wes Genrette.
Biological parent versus the parent who raised JJ
The question has two different answers depending on what “dad” means, and the story keeps them separate. The table below lists each role as the official sources describe it.
| Role | Person | What the official sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Biological father | Chandler Groff (also called Chandler Genrette) | Named as JJ’s biological father in Netflix’s Season 4 ending explanation. |
| Parent who raised him | Luke Maybank | Raised JJ and was the father JJ believed was biologically his until Season 4. He is not JJ’s biological father. |
| Biological mother | Larissa Genrette (deceased) | Described in the official cast guide as JJ’s mother; daughter of Wes Genrette. |
| Biological grandfather | Wes Genrette | Makes JJ his grandson through Larissa. |
When answering “who is JJ’s real dad,” the accurate phrasing is that Groff is his biological father, and Luke is the man who raised him. The reveal changes what JJ knows about his origins, but it does not erase the years Luke spent as his father.

How the truth comes out in Season 4
The reveal is set off by a letter rather than a confession. The sequence, as Netflix’s Season 4 recap describes it, runs as follows:
- Wes Genrette leaves a letter for JJ.
- The letter tells JJ to ask Luke about “Albatross,” the boat connected to the death of Larissa Genrette.
- JJ presses Luke on the subject.
- Luke reveals that Larissa was JJ’s mother and that Chandler Groff was his biological father.
The scene matters for the story because JJ’s parentage is learned through a chain of prompts from the Genrette side of the family, not through Luke volunteering it.
Why the reveal hits hard
Netflix’s official cast guide describes Luke’s relationship with JJ as abusive. The biological reveal therefore lands against a difficult history with the parent who raised him, rather than a warm one. Readers should keep that context in mind: the question of who JJ’s “real” father is carries emotional weight that goes beyond genetics.
What the creators and cast said
Netflix Tudum attributes this remark to Outer Banks co-creator Shannon Burke: “That was the most extreme thing we could think of: That JJ’s actually a Kook.” Tudum also reports that actor Rudy Pankow described the revelation as “a shock.”
