Born on May 2, 1999, she had already represented Algeria at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and won a silver medal at the 2022 IBA Women’s World Championships before becoming an Olympic champion.
Her victory was accompanied by a global dispute over boxing eligibility rules. The documented facts are more precise than many online summaries: the IBA said she failed eligibility tests in 2023, while the IOC said she was eligible to compete at Paris 2024. The underlying medical documents were not publicly released.

Why is Imane Khelif famous?
Imane Khelif is famous because she won Algeria’s Olympic gold medal in the women’s 66-kilogram boxing division at the Paris 2024 Games. The Olympic event was completed on August 9, 2024, with China’s Yang Liu taking silver and Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng and Taiwan’s Chen Nien Chin listed as joint bronze medalists.
Khelif’s achievement was historic for Algeria: she became the country’s first female Olympic boxing champion. Her victory also made her one of the most recognizable athletes of the Paris Games, not only because of her performance in the ring but because her participation was surrounded by an international dispute over sex-eligibility rules in boxing.

Those two parts of the story need to be kept separate. Khelif’s Olympic title is an official sporting result. The eligibility controversy involves competing positions from boxing’s former governing body and the Olympic movement, while some of the detailed medical claims circulated online have not been independently established by publicly released records.
Her early life and route into boxing
A UNICEF Algeria profile describes Khelif as growing up in difficult financial circumstances in rural Algeria. Before boxing, she played football. She later had to overcome family resistance to entering the sport as well as the practical problem of paying for transportation to training.
That account presents her path into boxing as a story of persistence and access to sport rather than an overnight rise to fame. It also reflects a broader challenge for girls entering sports that are often treated as unsuitable or unusual for them, particularly when regular training requires money, travel and family support.
It is worth being cautious with the more colorful details sometimes repeated in online biographies. The strongest background account in the available research is the UNICEF profile, so claims about her childhood should be attributed to that source rather than presented as independently verified when they are not.

Khelif was already an established international boxer before the 2024 Olympics. She represented Algeria at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, an event held in 2021 after the Games were postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Contemporary reporting placed her in the latter stages of that tournament before Ireland’s Kellie Harrington defeated her.
An International Boxing Association profile also records Khelif winning silver at the 2022 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. These results matter because they show that she was not an unknown entrant who suddenly appeared at Paris. She had spent several years competing internationally in women’s boxing before becoming an Olympic champion.

What happened during her Paris 2024 Olympic campaign?
Khelif’s Olympic run included four bouts:
- Opening bout against Angela Carini: The contest ended after 46 seconds when Italy’s Carini stopped the fight. Its brevity became a major social-media event, but the duration of a bout does not by itself establish anything about either boxer’s sex or eligibility.
- Quarterfinal against Anna Luca Hamori: Khelif defeated Hungary’s Hamori by a 5–0 points decision in the official Olympic session results.
- Semifinal against Janjaem Suwannapheng: Khelif defeated Thailand’s Suwannapheng to reach the final.
- Final against Yang Liu: Khelif defeated China’s Yang Liu to win the women’s 66-kilogram Olympic title.
The official Olympic ranking is the clearest record of the outcome. It lists Khelif first, Yang Liu second, and Suwannapheng and Chen Nien Chin jointly third.
What was the controversy about?
The dispute began with Khelif’s participation in the 2023 IBA Women’s World Championships. The IBA said that Khelif was disqualified after what it described as eligibility testing. According to the organization’s later explanation, its board ratified the decision on March 26, 2023. The IBA said Khelif received documents related to the testing and was informed that she could appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The IBA did not publicly release the underlying medical documents, saying that they contained private medical information. As a result, the public record supports a carefully limited statement: the IBA said Khelif failed its eligibility tests and was disqualified from that competition. It does not support presenting alleged leaked reports or social-media summaries of supposed test results as authenticated medical evidence.
Why did she compete at the Olympics?
The International Olympic Committee took a different position at Paris 2024. The IOC said Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting were eligible to compete in women’s boxing under the rules applicable to the Olympic tournament. It also criticized what it characterized as abusive and misleading attacks on the athletes.
The institutional context is important. The IOC had suspended the IBA’s recognition over concerns involving governance, finances, ethics and judging. The IBA was not the organization running boxing at the Paris Olympics. Olympic boxing was administered by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit, under the framework used for those Games.
An Olympic Studies Centre analysis later described the episode as a governance conflict between the IOC and the IBA, made more confusing by unclear and changing eligibility rules. It also described Khelif as a cisgender woman while emphasizing that the IBA had not publicly produced proof of its claimed findings. That analysis helps explain the public record and the institutional dispute; it is not a substitute for private medical records.

What is accurate to say about Khelif’s sex and gender?
Several different issues were repeatedly collapsed into one argument online. Gender identity, whether an athlete is transgender, sex characteristics, chromosomal or genetic information, and eligibility under a sports federation’s rules are related subjects, but they are not interchangeable terms.
Khelif has publicly identified and competed as a woman, and the reviewed reporting does not support describing her as transgender. The IOC’s position was that she was eligible under the rules used for Paris 2024. The IBA’s position was based on testing it said she had failed in 2023. Because the underlying documents were not publicly released, responsible coverage should attribute the organizations’ positions instead of declaring disputed medical claims to be settled fact.
The short bout with Carini also cannot resolve the question. A 46-second contest may prompt discussion about the physical risks and competitive standards of boxing, but it is not evidence of a boxer’s sex, gender identity or eligibility status.
What happened after the Olympics?
World Boxing introduced a different eligibility policy
In February 2025, World Boxing received provisional recognition from the IOC as the international federation for boxing. It subsequently announced a policy requiring athletes over 18 competing in its events to undergo a PCR or equivalent genetic test related to sex eligibility. The policy included an appeals process.
World Boxing later said the policy took effect in August 2025 and would apply to its competitions, including its world championships. The policy should not be retroactively treated as the rule used at Paris 2024: the Olympic tournament and later World Boxing competitions operated under different governing frameworks.
World Boxing initially named Khelif while announcing the policy, then apologized and said it should not have linked a general rule to an individual athlete. That apology is another reason to avoid describing the later policy as a ruling on Khelif’s medical status.

Cyber-harassment complaint
After the Paris Games, Khelif filed a complaint in France concerning alleged cyber harassment and online abuse. The complaint was directed against unknown persons on X, allowing investigators to identify specific contributors if the investigation warranted it.
A complaint or investigation is not the same as a finding of legal liability. The available information does not establish a final adjudication against named individuals, so the legal matter should be described as an allegation and investigation rather than a completed court ruling.

Reports from Algerian Radio and L’Équipe said Khelif was preparing for a professional debut against Germany’s Julia Igel at Paris’s Salle Wagram on April 23, 2026. On the basis of the available research, that bout should be described as announced or planned. No sufficiently authoritative official result was located to confirm that the fight took place or to state its outcome.
Khelif has also discussed continuing her boxing career and the possibility of targeting the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Whether she can participate would depend on the eligibility rules and decisions of the governing body responsible at that time.

Khelif’s story has three distinct strands. The first is athletic: she progressed from international competitor to Olympic champion, following an earlier Olympic appearance and a world-championship silver medal.
The second is personal and social: the account of a young Algerian woman overcoming financial, transportation and family obstacles to train in boxing illustrates how access can shape an athlete’s career. Her rise also helped bring women’s boxing in Algeria to global attention.

The third is institutional. The controversy exposed how much confusion can result when different sports organizations use different eligibility rules, when governing bodies are in conflict, and when private medical information is discussed publicly without supporting documentation. A clear account does not require choosing between the athlete’s achievement and the policy debate. It requires stating which organization made which claim, which rules applied, and what remains unverified.
