Sameha Kotb is Hoda Kotb’s mother. Hoda has described her as a source of strength and encouragement, while a 2010 Library of Congress feature identified Sameha as a longtime staff member there. Hoda’s own memoir excerpt offers the most detail about her parents’ education and family history; those details are her account, not independently verified records.
Who is Sameha Kotb?
Sameha Kotb is the mother of journalist and television host Hoda Kotb. The Library of Congress used the spelling “Sameha” in a 2010 profile about Hoda and described her then as a longtime Library of Congress staff member. That historical description does not establish whether she is still employed there.
Public information about Sameha is limited. The available accounts focus mainly on the influence Hoda says her mother had on her, rather than providing a comprehensive biography or current details about Sameha’s private life.
What has Hoda Kotb said about her mother?
In the Library of Congress feature, Hoda recalled her mother’s encouragement: “You can do it!” The article also quotes Hoda’s keynote message, “Behind every strong woman there’s a stronger woman.” The latter is Hoda’s description of her mother’s influence, not a quotation from Sameha herself.

What does Hoda’s memoir say about Sameha’s background?
In an excerpt from her memoir Hoda: How I Survived War Zones, Bad Hair, Cancer, and Kathie Lee, Hoda writes that her parents, Sameha and Abdel Kotb, graduated from Cairo University in 1958 and met while working at a law firm. She says her mother graduated first in her class and earned a law degree.
Hoda also describes Sameha raising three children while pursuing another degree and working. These are details from Hoda’s family recollection in the excerpt, rather than independently verified education or employment records. The memoir is Hoda’s account of her life, not a biography devoted solely to her mother. The family passage is available in the excerpt hosted by Kirkus Reviews; the publisher’s title page is at Simon & Schuster.
Why is Hoda Kotb’s mother sometimes called “Sami”?
Sources use different names: the Library of Congress article and Hoda’s memoir excerpt say “Sameha,” while a Biography.com profile uses “Sami.” The reviewed sources do not explain whether “Sami” is a nickname or another name variant, so the relationship between the two forms is not established. The 2024 Biography.com profile is available at Biography.com.
