Who is Hawkgirl in Superman?
Hawkgirl is one of the heroes in Gunn’s Superman, portrayed by Isabela Merced. DC’s film page identifies Merced as a cast member and features Hawkgirl, while the Associated Press describes her as part of the Justice Gang alongside Nathan Fillion and Edi Gathegi. The movie page does not explicitly identify this Hawkgirl as Kendra Saunders.
DC lists the film as directed by James Gunn, who also wrote the screenplay. Its official page gives July 11, 2025, as the U.S. nationwide and IMAX release date, with international release beginning July 9, 2025. DC’s official Superman page has the film details.
Is Hawkgirl Kendra Saunders?
Hawkgirl is a mantle used by more than one winged hero, rather than a single identity with one definitive origin. DC’s general character profile names Shayera Hol and Kendra Saunders, and describes Hawkgirl as a line of women from different backgrounds, including different planets. The profile is useful for understanding the broader comics character, but it does not establish which version Merced plays in this film.

DC’s profile gives Flash Comics #1 (1940) as Hawkgirl’s first appearance. It also identifies Kendra Saunders as an immortal warrior reborn across lives. Because DC’s film page does not print Merced’s character’s full name, it is more accurate to say that Kendra is one of the identities associated with Hawkgirl in DC’s comics profile—not to present her identity in the movie as confirmed.

DC’s general character profile lists the following abilities. These are character-profile details, not a confirmation that every power appears in Merced’s film portrayal.

How Isabela Merced approached the role
In an interview published August 18, 2025, by the Los Angeles Times, Merced said she did not initially know which character she was auditioning for. After fittings and fight training, James Gunn and the producers asked whether she wanted to play Hawkgirl. She was excited to take on a character she already knew.

Merced recalled growing up with the Justice League animated series and being a fan of Maria Canals-Barrera’s Hawkgirl. She also stressed that the animated character and her film character are different. Speaking about her connection to the earlier version, she said, “I grew up watching [the ‘Justice League’ animated series] and the character is canonically Latina, so I loved that.” Those are Merced’s reflections on her own connection to the role, not a description of every Hawkgirl incarnation.
Merced described the film version as the only young woman in a group of men and called her “the unfiltered and disconnected, doesn’t-care-how-she’s-perceived version of me.” Read her remarks in the Los Angeles Times interview.
