They married on January 4, 2024, announced their decision to divorce on April 12, and an Indiana judge finalized their divorce in June 2024.
Who is Theresa Nist?
Nist is the woman Turner selected at the end of the first season of The Golden Bachelor, whose finale aired November 30, 2023. ABC’s October 2023 contestant announcement described her as a 69-year-old securities professional from Shrewsbury, New Jersey; that was a season-era biography, not a current age or employment update. When did Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist marry and divorce?
Turner proposed to Nist in the season finale, and they married in a televised ceremony on January 4, 2024. On April 12, they announced on Good Morning America that they had decided to end the marriage. Their divorce was later finalized: USA TODAY reported on June 14, 2024, citing court records, that an Indiana judge had signed a summary decree of dissolution and approved their marital settlement agreement. The court papers listed April 12 as their separation date.
The couple’s April 12 announcement and the June 14 report on the court decree distinguish the public announcement from the legal end of the marriage.

Why did they split?
In their joint interview, Turner said they had talked at length and considered their living situation before mutually deciding that living apart was best for their happiness. At the time, Turner was based in Indiana and Nist in New Jersey. They had considered homes in South Carolina and New Jersey but had not settled on where to live. The couple’s explanation centered on the challenge of combining their lives and living arrangements; neither the announcement nor contemporary reporting establishes a more specific private cause.
The Los Angeles Times’ contemporary account described the unresolved plan to merge their lives. Nist later acknowledged the disappointment in a message quoted by Good Morning America: “sometimes things don’t go the way you planned and that’s okay.” She also asked people who felt confused or angry to respond with kindness. What did they say about the divorce?
On Good Morning America, Nist said she hoped the love and support viewers had felt for the couple—and the hope their story had given people—would not change. Her remarks and Turner’s explanation were made during the couple’s joint announcement; they describe what the two chose to share publicly, not every detail of their relationship.

In a November 2025 Vanity Fair interview about his memoir, Golden Years: What I’ve Learned from Love, Loss, and Reality, Turner discussed his account of the relationship. Nist disputed his portrayal of her and their interactions, telling the magazine that his remarks were not true and that the interactions were not described as they happened, calling the account “fiction.” The memoir is Turner’s account, and Nist’s response is her public disagreement; the interview does not make contested personal allegations independently established facts.
