DC continuity also includes Katar Hol, a Thanagarian police officer who has been beneath the same winged identity, and later stories have reworked how the two fit together. The short answer is a winged hero with enhanced strength and ancient weapons. The fuller answer depends on which version of the character you mean.
What the name means
In Portuguese, gavião is a hawk and negro means black, so the name translates roughly as “black hawk.” Brazilian Portuguese editions of DC material, including collections published by Panini Brasil, use this name for the character.
Two men behind one winged identity
Carter Hall: the archaeologist of the Golden Age
DC’s official character profile names Carter Hall as Hawkman’s real name. In the earliest version, he is an archaeologist connected to an ancient Egyptian story of death and rebirth. According to the same profile, Hawkman first appeared in Flash Comics #1 (1940).
Katar Hol: the Thanagarian police officer
Official DC material places the introduction of Katar Hol in the Silver Age, the period that followed the Golden Age. He is a police officer from the planet Thanagar who was sent to Earth. DC’s profile says he has also been beneath the Hawkman identity, so the two origins are not separate characters in the way many readers assume.

Why the origin is hard to pin down
DC’s official history by Meg Downey, “What’s the Deal With Hawkman?” (June 13, 2018), explains the confusion. Golden Age Hawkman was Carter Hall, the Silver Age introduced Katar Hol, and later continuity changes put the two versions together. Downey wrote: “But perhaps one of the most famous—or, depending on who you talk to, infamous—anomalies lies squarely on the shoulders of one Carter Hall aka Hawkman.”
In the modern account DC describes, Carter’s accumulated histories and past lives become part of one broader reincarnation story. DC’s 2018 series announcement described Carter Hall returning as an explorer investigating his many incarnations. Reincarnation is therefore the most common thread in modern summaries, but the way earlier origins are reconciled differs from one run to the next.

Powers and role
DC’s profile lists the following abilities:
- Flight
- Enhanced strength
- Weapons expertise
- Combat skill and combat strategy
- Reincarnation
The profile describes a winged figure with a bird-shaped helmet and ancient weaponry. Powers and origin details vary across depictions, so the list reflects DC’s standard summary rather than the explanation used in every era.
Team history: Justice Society and Justice League
DC connects Hawkman with the Justice Society of America and, later, the Justice League. Hawkgirl is his frequent companion and recurring partner in DC’s profile.
