In DC Comics, Wally West is generally the answer to “who is faster than Wally West?” in the sense that DC’s own editorial describes him as having reached and then passed Barry Allen’s top speed, and for a long stretch as the fastest of the DC Universe’s speedsters. Superman is the rival most often raised, but DC’s 2022 comparison of the two heroes describes a 2018 Flash War battle in which Superman could not keep pace with either Barry or Wally. No source reviewed here names a single character who is consistently faster than Wally across every continuity, story and era. The accurate answer depends on which comics, which timeframe and which kind of evidence you are looking at.
What “faster” means in this question
This is a question about fictional continuity, not a real-world speed measurement. Comic-book speed is set by writers, artists and editors, and it changes with each story. A ranking that holds in one arc can be overturned in the next, and the same character can win one contest and lose another within a single run. Treat any claim about who is fastest as a claim about a particular story, not a settled fact about the character.
How Wally passed Barry Allen
DC’s February 7, 2017 editorial on Wally’s speed development, “The Flash: Phasing and Other Speed Force Powers,” says that after Crisis on Infinite Earths Wally took up the Flash mantle, reached the top speed of his mentor and uncle Barry Allen, and eventually surpassed him. The same editorial describes Wally as the fastest DC Universe speedster for a long period. That is the foundation for the usual answer: within the Wally era, Barry is the first speedster Wally outran, not the last character Wally had to beat.
The claim is about Wally’s trajectory, not a permanent measurement. It tells you that Wally’s speed grew over his tenure and that DC treated that growth as a defining part of his character.

Superman: the rival that keeps coming back
Superman is the comparison readers reach for first, and DC’s July 6, 2022 “ASK…THE QUESTION: Superman vs. the Flash – Who Has More Wins?” is the most direct official treatment of the matchup. It traces the rivalry through several races, and it is useful because it shows how one result can be true and still not settle the question.
The first race with Wally
According to that 2022 comparison, Wally’s first race with Superman appeared in Adventures of Superman #463. The comparison treats it as part of a longer history of races rather than as a verdict on overall speed.

Flash War
The 2022 comparison also discusses the 2018 Flash War speed battle, in which Superman could not catch either Barry or Wally. This is the strongest single piece of evidence against Superman being the consistent fastest character in the Flash line, because it places Superman behind both speedsters in one of the most prominent recent speed-focused stories.
The one-off win over Barry
The same comparison recounts a clear Superman victory over Barry in Superman: Up in the Sky #4. DC frames that result as tied to an extraordinary, one-off outcome in its story. A real win in a specific story is not the same as a general speed advantage, and the editorial itself treats it that way.

What the Speed Force changes
Much of the speed debate depends on the Speed Force, the source that lets speedsters run faster than ordinary physics allows. DC’s April 11, 2023 editorial “The Speed Force Explained” says the concept first appeared in The Flash #91 (1994), during Wally’s tenure, and that Wally was the first Flash to learn of it. The same piece cautions that different writers have different ideas about how the Speed Force works, so a speed ranking that depends on one writer’s version may not carry over to another.
Writer Ryan North, interviewed in DC’s March 27, 2026 feature “The Joy of Running: Ryan North Charts a New Path for ‘The Flash,'” offered a personal explanation of the concept:
Rank #4
- 6-INCH SUPERMAN ACTION FIGURE: Bring home iconic Super Heroes and Super-Villains with these detailed, fully articulated 6-inch action figures—perfect for fans of the SUPERMAN movie
- AUTHENTIC THEATRICAL STYLING: Featuring signature details inspired by the SUPERMAN movie, each figure brings an iconic character to life for epic battle re-creations

- PERFECT FOR COLLECTORS & KIDS: Build your collection with characters like Superman, Mr. Terrific, Metamorpho, Green Lantern, Engineer, Hawkgirl, and more (each sold separately). A must-have for fans and collectors
- IDEAL HOLIDAY AND BIRTHDAY GIFT: Perfect for birthdays, holiday, and special celebrations, these action figures make the ultimate gift for Super Heroes fans who love imaginative play and storytelling
“So, the Speed Force, in my mind, is a manifestation of the writer’s desire to have Wally West run really, really fast, and not be a nuclear explosion.”
North presented this as his own interpretation, not a formal DC continuity rule. It is useful mainly as a reminder that the mechanics behind speed are often shaped by what a story needs.

Races, feats and circumstances: how to judge a claim
When someone says a character is faster than Wally, check the claim against these four questions before accepting it:
- Continuity and era. Which comic, run or timeline is the claim drawn from? Wally’s peak in the Waid-era stories is not the same as a later depiction.
- Direct race or indirect feat. A race between two characters is a head-to-head result. A feat, such as a single dramatic achievement, does not necessarily show who would win a contest.
- Special circumstances. Was a character impaired, empowered or in an unusual situation? DC’s comparisons repeatedly tie outcomes to such conditions.
- Speed control and Speed Force access. Top speed alone is not the whole picture. Control, endurance and access to the Speed Force can change the outcome in a story.
Other speedsters in the record
DC’s June 8, 2023 feature “A Quick Count: The Flash’s Greatest Feats of Speed” lists story-specific feats, including a Wally story in The Flash #130 and a race involving speedsters such as Wally, Impulse, Jesse Quick and Superman. These examples show that Wally is usually one of several fast contenders, not the only benchmark. They are story events, though, and should not be read as a universal measurement of speed.
Source summary
| Source (DC.com editorial) | Date | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| “The Flash: Phasing and Other Speed Force Powers” | February 7, 2017 | Wally reached and surpassed Barry’s top speed; described as the fastest DC Universe speedster for a long period |
| “ASK…THE QUESTION: Superman vs. the Flash – Who Has More Wins?” | July 6, 2022 | First Superman–Wally race in Adventures of Superman #463; Flash War result; one-off Superman win over Barry in Superman: Up in the Sky #4 |
| “The Speed Force Explained” | April 11, 2023 | Speed Force first appeared in The Flash #91 (1994); writers’ interpretations differ |
| “A Quick Count: The Flash’s Greatest Feats of Speed” | June 8, 2023 | Story-specific feats, including The Flash #130 and a multi-speedster race; no universal speed measurement stated |
| “The Joy of Running: Ryan North Charts a New Path for ‘The Flash'” | March 27, 2026 | Writer’s personal explanation of the Speed Force; not a formal continuity rule |
What the evidence does not settle
The sources do not give a comparable real-world figure for any character’s top speed. Story descriptions of time or distance are narrative claims about fictional events, so they cannot be combined into a ranking. Superman, Barry, Wally and other speedsters also appear in many titles, adaptations and alternate continuities that are not covered by these editorials, and the answer may differ in those versions. For a fictional question, the most defensible answer is the one tied to a named story and a named era.
In short: in DC’s official framing, Wally West is the strongest speedster for much of his run, Superman is the most common challenger but has lost to both Barry and Wally in key speed contests, and the Speed Force is interpreted differently from writer to writer.
