Eleven is a girl with psychic powers who escapes Hawkins National Laboratory and becomes central to the fight against threats connected to the Upside Down. She is played by Millie Bobby Brown. The name “Eleven” comes from the lab, where she was raised and used in experiments.
Who is Eleven, and where did she come from?
Netflix’s Stranger Things season-one recap describes Eleven as a young girl raised inside Hawkins National Laboratory, a secret Department of Energy facility. She is 12 when the series begins. “Eleven” is her laboratory designation: Netflix says she was the eleventh child brought there for experiments. Netflix’s season-one recap traces her origins to Terry Ives, who took part in government experiments while unknowingly pregnant. Her family was told the baby had miscarried, and Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper come to believe the lab took Terry’s child.
Dr. Martin Brenner raises Eleven at the lab as part of a secret government experiment. Millie Bobby Brown portrays her. Netflix’s season-five cast guide identifies Hopper as her adoptive father, Joyce as her foster mother, and Will Byers as her foster brother.
What can Eleven do?
Eleven has psychic abilities. She can move objects with her mind and reach people across great distances and dimensions. Hawkins Lab uses her to locate Russian spies and creatures from the Upside Down; later, she chooses to use her abilities to try to contact Will.

Her powers take effort and have physical costs. Using them can cause her nose to bleed, and larger objects or more distant targets require more exertion. To focus on finding someone, she uses a sensory-deprivation setup she calls “the bath.” These are fictional abilities and events within the series.
Who are Eleven’s friends and family?
After escaping the lab, Eleven meets Mike Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair, and Dustin Henderson while they search for Will. Their friendship becomes central to her life outside the laboratory. Hopper becomes her adoptive father, while Joyce and Will are described by Netflix as her foster family.

In Netflix’s season-five cast guide, Brown describes Eleven’s motivation this way: “All she is thinking about is protecting her friends. Her friends are her chosen family, so she will do whatever it takes to protect them.” The guide frames her as preparing to defend the people she loves after Vecna opens the Rifts at the end of Season 4.

Eleven’s link to the Upside Down begins with the experiments at Hawkins Lab. The lab uses her ability to make contact across dimensions, and the story connects that work to the creatures and events that threaten Hawkins.
