Claudia Jessie is the British actor who plays Eloise Bridgerton in Netflix’s Bridgerton. Eloise is the book-loving, outspoken young woman who questions a society that expects her future to revolve around marriage. Jessie built her career through comedy, theatre and television before the period drama brought her to a much wider audience.
Who does Claudia Jessie play in Bridgerton?
Netflix identifies Jessie as Eloise Bridgerton, one of the series’ central young women. Eloise is curious, sharp-tongued and drawn to books and conversation; she is also frustrated by the limited education and independence available to women in the show’s fictional society. Netflix’s Eloise character guide outlines her role and story.
Jessie has described Eloise’s central desire as the freedom to choose a life beyond the marriage market. In a 2020 Shondaland interview, she said Eloise wants “the freedom of choice to have a career and aspire without the pressure of the marriage mart.” That comment is about the character’s ambitions, not a statement about Jessie’s own plans. What is Claudia Jessie’s background?
In a 2024 interview with The Guardian, Jessie said she was born in Moseley, Birmingham, and spent her childhood between London and a houseboat in Birmingham. She recalled financial hardship and said her mother worked as a cleaner. These are details Jessie shared in that interview, rather than a full public record of her early life.
