He co-created an early what-you-see-is-what-you-get text editor at Xerox PARC, later led application teams at Microsoft, and flew to the International Space Station twice. His reported relationship with Martha Stewart is a notable part of his public story, but his impact on computing is the more enduring legacy.
Who is Charles Simonyi?
Born in Budapest, Simonyi moved to the United States in 1968 to study at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering mathematics. He later received a PhD in computer science from Stanford University. Stanford’s School of Engineering describes him as a co-creator of Bravo, an early WYSIWYG text editor, and as the chief architect of Microsoft Word and Excel. Stanford Engineering
WYSIWYG stands for “what you see is what you get”: the text and formatting on screen are meant to resemble the printed result. Simonyi’s career moved from developing such interfaces in a research lab to helping organize teams behind software used by millions.
What did Charles Simonyi do at Xerox PARC and Microsoft?
Xerox PARC: helping create Bravo
Simonyi worked at Xerox PARC from 1972 to 1980. There, he contributed design and implementation work to Bravo, which Stanford identifies as the first WYSIWYG text editor. The project was an early demonstration of a more visual way to compose and format documents. Stanford Engineering Computer History Museum

Microsoft: building an applications organization
Simonyi joined Microsoft in 1981 and helped establish its applications effort. He led and managed teams responsible for products including Word, Excel, and Multiplan; institutional accounts describe his role as architect and team leader, not as the sole author of every part of those programs. He left Microsoft in 2002 to found Intentional Software, which focused on software for knowledge processing and idea presentation. Computer History Museum Institute for Advanced Study
Looking back on Microsoft, Simonyi recalled Bill Gates’s emphasis on long-term work: “Profitability is a constant struggle. You have to struggle and work very hard, and you have to think in the long term.” Stanford also quotes his broader view of innovation: “I think it’s very important at any point in time to take stock of what’s at the edge of what’s possible and then push the boundary a little bit further.” Stanford Engineering

Did Charles Simonyi go to space twice?
Yes. Simonyi travelled to the International Space Station aboard Soyuz spacecraft in 2007 and again in 2009. The Computer History Museum calls him the fifth space tourist and the first tourist to fly twice. Computer History Museum
His first flight also intersected with his personal life: a contemporaneous 2007 Washington Post report said Stewart watched his launch from Baikonur and attended the Soyuz docking at Russian Mission Control. The Washington Post
