Taylor Swift has not confirmed that “CANCELLED!” is about one specific person. Her own explanation, reported from the release-party film for The Life of a Showgirl, is broader: the song is about backlash and public scrutiny, what that experience taught her about judging people, and choosing who to stand by based on how they actually behave. Names that circulate online, including Brittany Mahomes, Blake Lively, Sabrina Carpenter and Selena Gomez, appear in media speculation. Swift has not identified any of them as the song’s subject.
What Swift said about the song
Elle’s report by Brea Cubit, published October 3, 2025, quotes Swift discussing the track in The Official Release Party of a Showgirl. Two passages carry most of her explanation:

“I kind of wanted to write a song about how you can become wiser for it and you can become sharper, and I definitely judge people a lot less now that I’ve been kind of under the microscope for so long.”
“I just judge people based on who I know them to be, their actions, not like some kind of general consensus where people are like, ‘Step away! They’re radioactive.’”

- Taylor Swift's 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, will be released worldwide October 3, 2025
Elle also reproduces a shorter line: “I’m going to do that if somebody proves that they’re not a good person.” The coverage does not reproduce the question that prompted it, so the safest reading is as a general statement of how Swift treats people whose conduct has been called into question, not as a comment on a named individual.
These are remarks as quoted by Elle, not a full transcript of the film. Swift names no one in them.

Why no individual has been confirmed
The speculation about specific people rests on public appearances, friendships and timing, not on a statement from Swift. Glamour’s Stephanie McNeal (October 3, 2025) framed the attribution question directly, and Elle noted that Swift does not name the friends the song’s lyrics are read as referring to. Readers who see a name attached to the song should treat it as a theory unless the artist herself has said so.
The table below sets out the four names most often raised, against the one test that matters most: whether Swift has confirmed the link.

How critics read the song
Elle: cancel culture and solidarity
Elle reads the track as a critique of cancel culture and of criticism aimed at successful women, with an emphasis on solidarity among friends who have been through public scrutiny of their own. That reading follows the theme Swift describes, without attaching the song to a particular person.
Glamour: the “purity test” reading
Glamour places more weight on the scrutiny around Swift’s social circle, and on the frustration of people who are judged by whom she associates with, including what it calls public “purity tests.” This is the writer’s interpretation. Swift has not declared that the song is aimed at one person or at anyone in particular.

What the song is most clearly about
The reading best supported by Swift’s own words has three parts:
- A shared experience of being publicly judged, criticized or socially rejected.
- Loyalty grounded in personal knowledge of someone and in their actions, not in what a crowd has decided.
- A change in Swift’s own outlook: she says the scrutiny has made her less quick to judge.
No source establishes whether one relationship, several, or a broader set of experiences shaped the lyrics. A lyric-by-lyric hunt for a single target goes beyond what Swift has said.
