It is a fan-made creepypasta, a horror story that spread online, about a supposed zombie trainer hidden in Lavender Town’s Pokémon Tower. The real Pokémon Tower is a memorial site with a genuine ghost story, but nothing in the games or in the sources reviewed establishes Buried Alive as a boss, a trainer, or cut content.
What the games actually contain
Lavender Town’s Pokémon Tower is a burial place and memorial for deceased Pokémon. Its ghost story is the one that appears in the games themselves: a mother Marowak was killed while protecting her Cubone, and her spirit lingers in the tower. The player encounters the ghost and calms it. The tower, its graves, Ghost-type Pokémon and the mother Marowak are all documented game content.

The tower’s role changes in later titles. One account reviewed for this piece says that in some game generations Pokémon Tower becomes the Kanto Radio Station and the graves are moved elsewhere. Because the location is reused across editions, any statement about the tower should name the specific game it refers to.
What the Buried Alive creepypasta claims
Versions of the story share a set of recurring details. They are the claims readers encounter, not facts from the games:
#1 Best Overall
- Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
- Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
- Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
- Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
- Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.
- A half-buried zombie trainer supposedly waits near the top of Pokémon Tower.
- The trainer challenges the player to a battle, sometimes presented as a hidden final boss.
- Some versions describe a disturbing game-over screen or a freeze that follows the encounter.
- Some tellings mention related “White Hand” assets, which are presented as evidence of a removed feature.
Those details are storytelling. The account reviewed for this piece classifies them as creepypasta and finds no genuine evidence for Buried Alive or the White Hand material. Claims that Buried Alive was a removed or hidden boss should be attributed to the legend and not presented as verified development history.
Separating canon from legend
The quickest way to sort what you read online is to check each element against the games themselves.

| Element | In the official games | In the Buried Alive legend |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Tower, Lavender Town | Present; a memorial site for deceased Pokémon | The setting for the zombie encounter |
| Mother Marowak ghost | Present; killed protecting her Cubone and calmed by the player | Not mentioned as the central figure |
| Ghost-type Pokémon and graves | Present | Used as atmosphere |
| Buried Alive trainer as a boss | Not established in the games or reviewed sources | Described as a hidden final boss |
| Game-over freeze or disturbing ending | Not established | Described in some versions |
| White Hand assets as cut content | Not established | Claimed as evidence |
A useful test for any new claim is to ask whether it can be found in the original cartridge or an official release. If it cannot, it belongs to the legend.
Lavender Town Syndrome is a separate legend
Buried Alive is often discussed alongside the wider Lavender Town lore, but it should not be confused with Lavender Town Syndrome. A Den of Geek retrospective describes Lavender Town Syndrome as an urban legend and notes that there are no records supporting its claims of mass suicides or illnesses. Those claims should not be repeated as fact.

An academic dissertation on the game’s music offers a different explanation for the unsettling effect many players report. It attributes the feeling to musical irregularity and dissonance, and it treats stories about subliminal or perception-altering frequencies as creepypasta. That is an interpretation of the soundtrack, not evidence about where Buried Alive came from.

Playing through Pokémon Tower in the original game is the most direct test. Compare what you find floor by floor with the claims above. If a hidden trainer or final boss does not appear in the game, the story is fan fiction, however convincingly it is told.
