Hannah Neeleman is a Juilliard-trained dancer, pageant winner and social media creator behind Ballerina Farm, the family farming and lifestyle business she runs with her husband, Daniel, in Utah. The controversy took off after a July 2024 Sunday Times profile portrayed aspects of their marriage and home life as unequal. Neeleman rejected that interpretation, described the couple as equal partners, and said she does not necessarily identify as a “tradwife.”

Who is Ballerina Farm and who is Hannah Neeleman?

Ballerina Farm is both the Neelemans’ family business and Hannah Neeleman’s social media identity. Her public content shows rural family life and farm work, including livestock, scratch cooking and sourdough baking. She trained in ballet at Juilliard and later became a pageant winner and creator.

TIME reported in July 2025 that Neeleman began using Instagram to help sell her family farm’s meat and that she operates the business with Daniel. The Los Angeles Times also reported that she worked on marketing and running the family store. TIME described her audience as 20 million combined Instagram and TikTok followers at that time; that is a dated figure, not a current count. TIME also noted Neeleman’s acknowledgment that social media does not show the full picture of working motherhood.

What is the Ballerina Farm controversy?

The immediate trigger was a profile by Megan Agnew published in the Sunday Times on July 20, 2024, after she visited the family’s Utah home and farm. The Los Angeles Times’ account of the profile said Agnew described Daniel as frequently answering for or correcting Hannah, and presented some choices around farming, childcare and domestic life as reflecting Daniel’s preferences.

Agnew’s reported observations and framing led many readers to interpret the relationship as unequal and Neeleman as constrained. They are not independent proof of the couple’s private motives or relationship. Agnew’s line, quoted by the Los Angeles Times, was: “I can’t, it seems, get an answer out of Neeleman without her being corrected, interrupted or answered for by either her husband or a child.”

Why did the profile provoke such different reactions?

Online discussion focused on the apparent contrast between Neeleman’s former ballet ambitions and her current family life, her reported comments about exhaustion, and details such as the couple’s first date and an egg-apron birthday gift. Some readers saw the profile as evidence of constrained choice or an unequal household dynamic. Others defended her right to choose a family-centered or traditional life.

Those responses are interpretations, not settled findings about the marriage. The debate also concerned how influencer content represents everyday life: a curated social media view can prompt assumptions about what work, motherhood and choice look like, but it cannot by itself establish the private experience behind the posts.

What did Hannah Neeleman say in response?

Neeleman said the article shocked her and described it as an attack on her family and marriage. In a response reported by Deseret News, she described herself and Daniel as “co-parents, co-CEOs, co-diaper changers, kitchen cleaners and decision-makers.” She directed followers to Ballerina Farm’s “About Us” account of her story.

That is Neeleman’s public account of the relationship, just as the Sunday Times profile is Agnew’s account of what she observed and how she interpreted it. The available public statements do not establish an objective verdict on whether the relationship is unequal.

Does Hannah Neeleman consider herself a tradwife?

Not necessarily. In comments from the Sunday Times interview reported by Vanity Fair, Neeleman said, “I don’t necessarily identify with it.” She added that some traditional elements resonated with her, while saying she felt they were also “paving a lot of paths that haven’t been paved before.” The label is therefore part of the public debate about her image, not a description she has straightforwardly adopted.

What was the earlier Ballerina Farm pageant controversy?

In January 2024, scrutiny followed Neeleman’s appearance in the Mrs. World pageant shortly after she gave birth to her eighth child. Axios reported that critics worried her postpartum presentation could set an unrealistic example for women, while defenders argued that such criticism dismissed her personal choices. That dispute was about representation and audience expectations; it does not amount to a medical assessment of Neeleman.
