Why does 001 have so many names?
They refer to one person at different points in his life and story. “001” is his Hawkins Lab designation; “One” is the name used for him at the lab; Henry Creel is his personal identity; and Vecna is the form he takes after Eleven sends him into the Upside Down. Matt Duffer confirmed the identities are the same in Netflix Tudum’s interview about the Season 4 reveal.

How is Henry Creel connected to Hawkins Lab?
Henry is tied to the deaths at the Creel family home. After he falls into a coma, Dr. Brenner takes him in. His history becomes bound up with Brenner’s Hawkins Lab project and the numbered subjects who follow, including Eleven. Netflix’s Season 4 recap and ending explanation outlines that sequence.
Eleven and Henry are connected through the lab, not established as biological siblings. The show’s “family” framing for the numbered children should not be mistaken for proof of a blood relationship.

How does 001 become Vecna?
Eleven confronts One at Hawkins Lab and banishes him into the Upside Down. There, he becomes Vecna. The identity reveal links the lab’s first subject to the antagonist the characters face years later; it is not a case of two separate villains sharing a story.
Actor Jamie Campbell Bower has discussed playing the connected identities in Netflix Tudum’s interview about his role.

What remains ambiguous about Henry’s connection to the Mind Flayer?
Henry’s identity as Vecna is settled; the uncertainty concerns his agency and connection to the Mind Flayer. In a Netflix Tudum interview published January 2, 2026, Matt and Ross Duffer said the finale leaves viewers to consider whether young Henry chose that connection or was controlled. They also said that, in the end, Henry chooses the Mind Flayer’s side. That ambiguity does not change who 001 is.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow is a stand-alone stage play set in Hawkins in 1959, centered on teenage Henry Creel and his family. It offers additional backstory, but it is not required to understand the Season 4 identity reveal. Netflix’s official description of the play gives its premise.
