Charles Schulz named Linus after his friend and former classmate Linus Maurer. The surname Van Pelt came from a different acquaintance: fellow soldier Philip “Fritz” Van Pelt. The two names have separate real-life origins, but that does not mean either man was a complete model for the Peanuts character.
Linus’s first name came from Linus Maurer
According to Minneapolis College of Art and Design’s account, Schulz and Maurer were friends and former classmates. Schulz reportedly showed Maurer an early sketch of the character before deciding to name him Linus.
Linus made his first appearance in Peanuts on September 19, 1952, according to the Peanuts character profile. The name therefore began with a real friendship, even though the character would become his own distinct creation.
“Van Pelt” has a separate origin
Schulz later took the surname from Philip “Fritz” Van Pelt, a fellow soldier he met in Colorado Springs. The Charles M. Schulz Museum timeline says the men and their wives became friends and played bridge together weekly. Thus, Linus Maurer is the source for the character’s first name, while Fritz Van Pelt is associated with the surname.

A namesake is not the same as a personality model
The naming connection does not establish that Maurer inspired Linus’s personality, opinions, or security blanket. The Schulz Museum’s frequently asked questions explains that some characters share names with people Schulz knew, but none was copied exactly; the characters, the museum says, are most reflective of Schulz himself.
Schulz put that distinction plainly: “Linus has weird little thoughts. Naturally they are my own thoughts.” Peanuts.com attributes a complementary description to Schulz, calling Linus “my serious side” and describing him as the strip’s intellectual. Those remarks concern Schulz’s creation, not evidence about what the real Linus Maurer was like.
