Gwen Stefani’s publicly documented significant relationships are with three men: No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal, Bush singer Gavin Rossdale, and country singer Blake Shelton. Kanal was her first boyfriend, Rossdale was her husband and the father of their three sons, and Shelton is the husband she married in 2021. Public reporting does not amount to a complete list of everyone she has dated, so read this as the documented core of her romantic history rather than an exhaustive record.

Tony Kanal: her first boyfriend
Kanal is the bassist of No Doubt, the band Stefani fronted before and during her solo career. In a 2016 Vanity Fair interview, Stefani identified him as her first boyfriend and said she was 17 when they met. She described the relationship as the only one she had really had before she met Rossdale, and said of Kanal: “It was the only relationship I had really ever had.”

The public record does not give the years they dated, and it does not establish how long the relationship lasted. TIME has also reported that Stefani wrote No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” about her breakup with Kanal, which places the end of that relationship in the band’s songwriting history rather than in a dated announcement.
Gavin Rossdale: her husband and the father of her sons
Stefani and the Bush singer were a long-term couple who married and had three sons. The cited reporting does not give the wedding date. In 2015, ABC News reported their separation and a joint statement that they remained partners in parenthood. ABC’s 2024 report refers to Stefani’s divorce from Rossdale in 2016, so the divorce date in the record is 2016.

The circumstances of the split have drawn tabloid speculation, including claims about an affair. TIME notes that Stefani kept the exact circumstances private and labels the affair account as tabloid reporting. Those claims are not established fact, and this article does not repeat them as such.
Blake Shelton: her husband
Stefani and Shelton met while working as coaches on The Voice. In November 2015, a representative for Stefani confirmed the relationship, stating: “Gwen and Blake are longtime friends who have very recently started dating.” The couple announced their engagement in October 2020 and married in 2021. In a November 2024 ABC News report, Stefani was quoted describing Shelton this way: “God putting Blake in my life was just that miracle.” That report is the most recent relationship-status source reviewed for this article, and it describes them as married.

Music context and what it does not prove
Stefani’s 2016 album This Is What the Truth Feels Like is often read alongside her marriage’s breakdown and her new relationship. TIME connects the album to both. Stefani said that writing from a place of being in love and grateful felt new to her. Her later single “Bouquet” was characterized by AP as an ode to her husband, Shelton.
