What happened at the Reiners’ home?
Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, died at their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles. In a December 16, 2025 charging announcement, the Los Angeles County District Attorney said Nick Reiner was accused of fatally stabbing them in the early morning hours of December 14 at the home in the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue. What is the status of the criminal case?
Prosecutors charged Nick Reiner with two counts of murder and alleged the special circumstance of multiple murders, as well as personal use of a knife. Those are allegations, not findings of guilt. The county’s latest update, dated September 15, 2026, said Nick had pleaded not guilty and that the case remained under investigation by the LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division. Prosecutors will not seek the death penalty
On September 15, 2026, the District Attorney’s Office announced it would not seek the death penalty. The county said that, if convicted as charged, Nick Reiner faced life in state prison without parole. The county also emphasized that he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. What has been said about mental illness
The Associated Press reported on September 15, 2026, that public defender Kimberly Greene described Nick Reiner as having serious mental illness and a long history of self-medication. That is his attorney’s statement; it is not an independently established diagnosis or an explanation of the alleged killings. The official county materials do not establish a motive.
