Eleven’s fate, however, is deliberately left uncertain. Steve nearly dies but survives.
Who dies in the Stranger Things finale?
Netflix’s finale recap reports several deaths during the last episode. The outcomes are not all equally definite: Kali’s death is described as apparent, while Eleven’s ending is explicitly open to interpretation.
- Vecna (Henry Creel): Joyce delivers the final blow, beheading him with her axe after Will and Eleven help overpower him.
- The Mind Flayer: The Hawkins group attacks and kills it in the Abyss, where it is revealed that the Pain Tree is the Mind Flayer.
- Lt. Akers: Eleven forces him to turn his gun on himself.
- Wolf Pack soldiers: Hopper kills several while trying to rescue Kali; Eleven uses her powers against the remaining soldiers.
- Kali: Lt. Akers seemingly shoots and kills her when Hopper refuses to reveal Eleven’s location. Netflix’s recap presents her death as apparent, so it should not be described as more certain than the source does.
- Eleven: Her fate is unresolved, not a confirmed death or survival.
The soldier deaths are reported as several unnamed casualties; the recap does not give a total. They are distinct from the named characters and monsters in the list.
Does Eleven die?
The finale shows Eleven appearing to sacrifice herself as the Upside Down is destroyed. Later, Mike imagines that Kali may have created an illusion, allowing Eleven to escape and live somewhere else. That is Mike’s account of what might have happened, not confirmation from the episode that she survived.

- In 1980s Indiana a group of friends witness supernatural forces and government exploits. In searching for answers, they unravel a series of mysteries.
The Duffer Brothers chose to leave the question for viewers to decide. The careful answer is therefore that Eleven’s ending is ambiguous: the apparent sacrifice is onscreen, while survival is presented as a possibility in Mike’s story.
Who kills Vecna?
Joyce kills Vecna. Will overpowers Henry during the confrontation, and Eleven drives him through a spire; Joyce then beheads him with her axe. The final blow belongs to Joyce, not Eleven or Will.

In a Netflix Tudum interview published January 2, 2026, Ross Duffer said Joyce was the right person to finish the fight because she was the first to act and believe something was wrong in Season 1: “At the end of the day, it felt like it had to be Joyce because Joyce was the first one [in Season 1] to really take action, to believe that something strange was going on.”
Is Steve dead?
No. Steve slips from the radio tower before the final battle and nearly dies, but Jonathan saves him. The Duffer Brothers describe the fall as a near-death experience, not Steve’s death. They also said the scene resolves the tension between Steve and Jonathan before the group enters its final fight.
What the final scene means
The finale ends with the friends playing one last Dungeons & Dragons campaign, then hands the story to Holly and a younger generation. Ross Duffer described the last D&D scene as “this group of characters saying goodbye to their childhood.” The ending frames the campaign as a farewell to the group’s childhood, even as Eleven’s fate remains unanswered.

Netflix’s official series page identifies Season 5 as the fifth and final season and lists “The Finale” for New Year’s Eve in its 2025 release schedule. Netflix Tudum identifies the finale episode as “The Rightside Up.” The finale is now a released story, so the useful question is what happens—not which character might die in a future volume.
