Spoiler: Leon Vance dies in “All Good Things,” the 500th episode of NCIS. Rocky Carroll, who has played the NCIS director for 18 seasons, said the producers conceived Vance’s death as a sacrifice that saves the agency—and as a deliberate ending for the character.
What happens in “All Good Things”?
The CBS episode, written by Steven D. Binder and directed by José Clemente Hernandez, was scheduled to air March 24, 2026. Its official synopsis sets up a case involving the son of a Marine Gibbs once helped: the man turns to NCIS in desperation, bringing the fractured team together to work off the books. Paramount Press Express identifies it as the series’ 500th episode.
That case unfolds alongside a threat to NCIS itself. Carroll told TVLine that executive producer Binder proposed a story in which the agency faced dismantlement or absorption into another agency, and Vance would save it at the cost of his life. Carroll said Binder described the story as “a tribute and a love letter to your character.”
Why does Vance die?
Carroll said the producers approached him with the storyline; he did not ask to leave. He learned the plan roughly two episodes before filming. Though the news surprised him, he said he came to terms with it quickly and saw the sacrifice as a strong story and fitting closure for a character who had been part of the series for 18 seasons.

Does Rocky Carroll leave NCIS?
Vance’s on-screen death is not the same as Carroll leaving all work on the series. In his interview, Carroll said he returned to direct about a month after filming the episode and expected to direct again. That was his account at the time; it does not establish a particular future episode or schedule. TVLine’s interview reports that Carroll joined NCIS in 2008, near the end of Season 5. CBS News describes his tenure as nearly two decades. CBS News
