Spoilers for Marvel Studios’ Eternals (2021). The film presents five major death or death-like outcomes: Ajak, Gilgamesh, Kro, Ikaris, and the stopped Celestial Tiamut. Their impact ranges from triggering the story’s central betrayal to resolving a personal revenge arc. Sprite survives and becomes human; Kingo’s departure from the final battle is not a death.
Who dies in Eternals?
The clearest way to answer is to separate personal deaths from the film’s cosmic-scale outcome. Ajak, Gilgamesh, Kro, and Ikaris die in the story. Tiamut’s emergence is stopped when Sersi turns the Celestial to stone; describing that as Tiamut’s “death” is an interpretation, not the most precise account of what the film shows.

| Character | What happens | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ajak | Ikaris feeds her to the Deviants, then leaves her body where the others find it. Her death initially appears to be a Deviant attack. | Her death reunites the Eternals and prompts them to investigate the returning Deviants. It also conceals Ikaris’s betrayal and exposes the divide over the Emergence. |
| Gilgamesh | Kro kills him during the confrontation in the Amazon. | Gilgamesh is Thena’s protector and closest companion. His death makes her conflict with Kro personal. |
| Kro | Thena kills him during the climactic conflict. | His death resolves Thena’s revenge arc; it does not stop the Emergence. |
| Ikaris | After the conflict, unable to reconcile his choices, he flies into the sun. The film presents this as his death. | It closes the arc of a character torn between affection for Sersi and the other Eternals, and loyalty to the Celestial plan. |
| Tiamut | Sersi uses the Eternals’ combined Uni-Mind energy to turn the emerging Celestial to stone and stop the Emergence. | Stopping the emergence saves Earth. This is a cosmic-scale outcome, distinct from a personal death. |
Why are the Eternals fighting over the Emergence?
The Eternals arrive on Earth to protect humanity from the Deviants, but their mission has limits: they are not permitted to intervene in other human conflicts. D23’s account of the film explains that boundary, which also helps explain why the team did not step into events involving Thanos, Ultron, or Loki (D23’s film overview).
The return of the population after Thanos’s snap supplies the energy that triggers the Emergence. The revelation is that the Eternals’ mission has been preparing populated worlds for a Celestial’s birth, at the cost of life on those worlds. The story’s conflict is therefore about whether obedience to that plan can outweigh the lives the Eternals have protected.

Ajak’s choice and Ikaris’s betrayal
Ajak decides to oppose the Emergence. Ikaris remains loyal to Arishem and kills her, hiding his role until the others uncover the truth. Her death is not merely the inciting mystery: it reveals that the Eternals’ disagreement has become a personal betrayal.
Which characters survive, and what can look like a death?
- Sprite survives. She briefly sides with Ikaris, then joins the effort to stop the Emergence. She asks Sersi to make her human, and Sersi grants the request. Sprite’s transformation ends her immortal, childlike condition; it does not kill her.
- Kingo survives. He disagrees with the plan but will not fight his fellow Eternals, so he leaves rather than take part in the final confrontation.
- Thena, Makkari, and Druig survive. They leave Earth aboard the Domo, setting up further story threads rather than adding to the death toll.
The film’s cast listing names Sersi, Phastos, Makkari, Druig, Kingo, Sprite, Thena, Ajak, Ikaris, Gilgamesh, and Dane Whitman (Disney’s Eternals page). Being listed in the cast does not establish a character’s fate; the ending’s shown events are a safer guide than assumptions about later appearances.

“Might not matter” is a useful question about how the film handles its losses, but it is not an objective verdict that every death is meaningless. The consequences differ:
- Ajak’s death matters structurally: it draws the group together and exposes Ikaris’s role in the conflict.
- Gilgamesh’s death matters personally: it deepens Thena’s loss and drives her confrontation with Kro.
- Kro’s death matters as a revenge payoff: it closes that conflict, not the planetary crisis.
- Ikaris’s end matters to his character arc: it resolves his divided loyalty as the film presents it. The ending does not establish that later franchise appearances are impossible.
- Tiamut’s stopped emergence matters at the largest scale: it determines whether Earth survives.
These outcomes can be compared by asking who caused each one, what changes immediately in the plot, whose emotions are affected, and whether the event is a personal death, a Celestial being stopped, a transformation, or simply a departure. That distinction keeps a cosmic climax from flattening the more intimate losses into one undifferentiated list.
