WWE fans know Adam Copeland as Edge; on the historical drama Vikings, he played Kjetill Flatnose. The character makes his debut in season 5, episode 5, according to 2017 reporting from ESPN and Sports Illustrated. Copeland’s interviews from that period describe why he pursued the role and how the series challenged him in ways that differed from wrestling.

Edge played Kjetill Flatnose

Copeland appeared on Vikings as Kjetill Flatnose. WWE’s official video page identifies the appearance as Edge’s debut as Kjetill on HISTORY’s series: WWE’s video page.

ESPN’s Tim Fiorvanti reported on November 29, 2017, that Kjetill debuts in the fifth episode of season 5. Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso reported the same episode context in an interview published November 27, 2017. The season premiere begins to touch on Kjetill’s storyline, but those accounts place the character’s debut in episode five. ESPN’s 2017 profile and Sports Illustrated’s interview provide that context.

Why Copeland pursued the part

In 2017, Copeland described acting as a creative outlet after being told he would not be cleared to wrestle again. After Haven, he began seeking auditions for shows he already enjoyed, and Vikings was on that list. He told ESPN it was the first audition he received after returning to auditions: “One of the things that I wanted to do post-‘Haven’ is go after some shows I was a fan of already, and ‘Vikings’ was on the list,” he said.

In the Sports Illustrated interview, Copeland recalled auditioning and reading for the show, having the right look for the part, and being in Ireland filming a week later. That sequence is his recollection in the interview, not an independently verified production timeline.

Kjetill was not another version of Edge

Copeland drew a clear distinction between his wrestling persona and the character. Edge, he said, was his imagined combination of a rock star and a wrestler, with inspirations including KISS, Cheap Trick, and Queen. Kjetill felt closer to Copeland himself. “Kjetill is much closer to how I am, whereas Edge was what I always pictured of when a rock star met a wrestler and merged,” he told Sports Illustrated.

He also described Kjetill’s storyline as a gradual, layered progression that developed as the series went on. The role therefore offered a different kind of performance from the highly stylized persona familiar to wrestling audiences.

What the role demanded on set

Copeland described Vikings as a physical production. For the part, he grew a beard, wore period clothing, and took part in scenes involving rowing Viking longships on the Irish Sea or on lakes in Ireland. He also said the cast performed fight and battle scenes. In the Sports Illustrated interview, he summed up the experience this way: “Vikings is a very physical, tough show. If you see battle scenes, it’s us doing it.” That is his description of the production and does not establish that every scene was performed without stunt personnel.

Historical drama and accents were new challenges for him. Some of the physical work reminded him of WWE, but the working methods differed: filmed scenes can require multiple takes, unlike a live wrestling match. Copeland recalled, “I loved that wrestling was live,” pointing to the immediacy that distinguishes the two forms.
