David and Elizabeth Emanuel designed Princess Diana’s wedding dress, and their names were known before her 1981 wedding. That differed from Catherine Middleton’s choice of Sarah Burton and Meghan Markle’s choice of Clare Waight Keller: each designer’s identity remained secret until the bride appeared on her wedding day. Diana’s gown design, however, was still closely guarded.
Who designed Diana’s wedding dress?
British designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel created Diana, Princess of Wales’s wedding dress. Their commission was publicly known before Diana married Prince Charles at St Paul’s Cathedral on July 29, 1981, a wedding that drew major international media attention, according to Historic Royal Palaces.
Knowing who was making the gown did not mean journalists could see what it would look like. Historic Royal Palaces describes tight security at the Emanuels’ studio, where blinds were drawn amid intense press speculation. Elizabeth Emanuel later recalled that the designers used shutters and misleading scraps of fabric to throw journalists off the scent, as reported by Vanity Fair.
How did Diana’s dress differ from Kate’s and Meghan’s?
| Bride | Designer and house | When the designer was identified | Documented design detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diana | David and Elizabeth Emanuel | Publicly known before the July 29, 1981 wedding | Train over 7 metres (25 feet) long, according to Historic Royal Palaces |
| Catherine Middleton (Kate) | Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen | Kept secret until the wedding day, according to Historic Royal Palaces | Ivory satin, a boned bodice and full skirt, with handworked lace produced with the Royal School of Needlework |
| Meghan Markle | Clare Waight Keller, then artistic director of Givenchy | Kept secret until Meghan arrived at St George’s Chapel, according to Historic Royal Palaces | Bateau neckline; the palace describes a five-metre veil embroidered with flora from Commonwealth countries |
The comparison is about when each designer’s identity became public—not how much of each gown’s creation was concealed. The palace’s account of Kate’s dress and Meghan’s dress, as well as its comparison of the reveal dates, appears in Historic Royal Palaces’ history of royal weddings.

What is known about Meghan’s secrecy?
Waight Keller also described keeping the commission private even from her husband. She recounted that detail in an interview reported by ABC News Australia. That recollection illustrates the discretion around Meghan’s commission; it does not establish a single reason why her designer’s identity was kept secret.
