Wicked was created for the stage by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, working from Gregory Maguire’s novel. Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics; Holzman wrote the book—the musical’s script and story.
Who wrote the musical Wicked?
The musical’s official story page credits Stephen Schwartz with music and lyrics and Winnie Holzman with the book. Schwartz’s official work page confirms those principal writing roles.

So “creator” is best understood as a collaboration, not a single-author credit: Schwartz and Holzman shaped the stage musical in distinct roles.
How Gregory Maguire’s novel fits in
The musical is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Maguire wrote the source novel; Schwartz and Holzman adapted its story for the stage in their respective roles. The musical’s credits establish that relationship, but do not by themselves provide a detailed account of how particular scenes or themes changed in adaptation.

How long did the writing process take?
In an interview with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Schwartz recalled that the team worked on the show for about four years. He also said he, Holzman, and producer Marc Platt spent about a year developing an outline. These are Schwartz’s approximate recollections, not independently audited production dates.
