When was Minecraft created and released?
Minecraft’s first PC version was released in 2009, and its full version followed in 2011, according to the official Minecraft overview. These milestones distinguish the game’s early release from its full release.
What did Mojang and the community contribute?
Persson’s creator credit is one part of a longer story. Minecraft’s official credits list him among Mojang Studios alumni and separately identify people serving in studio roles. The credits therefore distinguish the original creator from the team responsible for the game’s subsequent development and stewardship.

Mojang Studios’ 2020 account of Minecraft’s 11th birthday describes the studio’s humble beginnings in Stockholm and emphasizes the community’s importance to the game’s development and success. Players helped shape Minecraft’s growth; the available official account does not provide a complete roster of the earliest contributors or a detailed account of the original design process.
What happened to Minecraft and Mojang in 2014?
On September 15, 2014, Microsoft announced an agreement to acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion. Microsoft said Mojang’s team would join Microsoft Studios and reported that the founders were moving on to new projects. The announcement also put the game’s scale in historical context: Microsoft reported more than 100 million PC downloads since Minecraft’s 2009 launch. That is a dated download figure from 2014, not a current player count.

In the announcement, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella called Minecraft “an open world platform, driven by a vibrant community we care deeply about.” Mojang CEO Carl Manneh said the players had taken the game “and turned it into something that surpassed all of our expectations.” Both statements were made in the context of the acquisition announcement, rather than as independent measurements of the game’s impact.
