Seven women appear in lists published in 2024 and 2025, but a later report also names Luxembourg’s Grand Duchess Stéphanie. The Vatican’s public pages do not publish an authoritative eligibility list, so “seven” is a dated media-reported count—not an official current Vatican figure.
Who are the seven women named in 2024–25 reports?
Rome Reports listed seven women on 24 September 2024; Royal Central repeated the same seven in May 2025. The names below reflect those reports, not a roster published by the Vatican.
| Woman | Royal house | What the reports say |
|---|---|---|
| Queen Sofía | Spain | Named in both seven-person lists. |
| Queen Letizia | Spain | Named in both lists. Rome Reports says the privilege passed to her when she became queen in 2014. |
| Queen Paola | Belgium | Named in both lists as an emerita queen. |
| Queen Mathilde | Belgium | Named in both lists; she was reported wearing white at an audience with Pope Leo XIV on 27 October 2025. |
| Grand Duchess Maria Teresa | Luxembourg | Named in both lists; Rome Reports says she may choose black instead. |
| Princess Charlene | Monaco | Named in both lists. Royal Central says she was permitted to use the privilege after a 2013 meeting with Benedict XVI. |
| Princess Marina of Savoy | Savoy | Named in both lists. Tatler uses “Princess Marina of Naples”; Royal Central uses “Princess Marina of Savoy.” |
Why is the number not definitively seven?
A later Marie Claire article also names Luxembourg’s Grand Duchess Stéphanie alongside Maria Teresa. Its formal recognition date and official basis were not established in the reviewed public sources. Because the Vatican does not publish a list confirming who qualifies, the count depends on which media report is being cited. A careful description is that seven women were named in the 2024 and May 2025 reports, while a later report adds Stéphanie.
Reports connect eligibility with Catholic royal houses and Catholic sovereigns or consorts, but that is not a published Vatican test. Rome Reports gives Queen Máxima of the Netherlands as an example: although Catholic, it says she is not eligible because she married into a Protestant royal house. That explanation should be understood as the outlet’s account, not a formal rule confirmed by the Holy See.

What does wearing white mean, and is it required?
Reports describe a white outfit, often accompanied by a white mantilla, as the visible expression of the privilege. It is permission, not an obligation: Rome Reports says eligible women may choose black, and gives Charlene and Maria Teresa as examples. Tatler describes lace veils as customary rather than compulsory and says the dress convention is no longer enforced in the same way.
Black formal clothing is described in coverage as the traditional convention for other women at formal papal encounters. These accounts describe protocol and custom; they should not be mistaken for a current, universally enforced Vatican dress regulation.

What recent appearances illustrate the custom?
At Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration Mass on 18 May 2025, Royal Central reported that Mathilde, Letizia, Maria Teresa and Charlene wore white, while Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and Queen Máxima wore black. The choices illustrate the reported distinction between permission and requirement; clothing at one event does not establish someone’s eligibility.
ACI Prensa reported that Queen Mathilde wore a white suit and mantilla for an audience with Leo XIV on 27 October 2025. It is a dated example of the attire, not evidence that all eligible women must dress alike.

What does the Vatican say about audiences and protocol?
The Holy See’s Participation in Audiences and Pontifical Celebrations page provides audience information and identifies the Prefecture of the Papal Household as a relevant contact. It says tickets for general audiences and papal liturgical celebrations are free, but does not mention the privilege or provide a dress-code list.
The official Prefecture of the Papal Household profile says the office plans and executes papal ceremonies apart from their strictly liturgical aspect, determines precedence, and organizes public, special and private audiences. That makes the office relevant to protocol; the profile does not say that it issued or administers this particular custom.

What remains unconfirmed?
The public sources cited here do not establish the privilege’s definitive historical origin, its exact legal or canonical status, an authoritative current eligibility list, or the formal recognition date for Grand Duchess Stéphanie. Until an official Vatican or royal-house statement addresses those points, the list and its underlying criteria are best treated as media-reported protocol.
