That is an individual early reaction—not an official verdict or proof that critics broadly agreed. Variety also reported that entertainment journalist Scott Menzel called the film a “masterpiece,” while recording reservations from another critic.
Who called Project Hail Mary a “masterpiece”?
Josh Gad, the actor known for Frozen, supplied the headline’s exact phrase. In an Instagram post quoted by GamesRadar on February 19, 2026, he wrote: “Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the first masterpiece of 2026.”

Gad also praised the adaptation, writing that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who co-directed it, and screenwriter Drew Goddard had delivered a “PERFECT adaptation” of a book he thought was impossible to adapt. That is Gad’s assessment, not an official rating.
Was the praise unanimous?
No. Variety’s report on early reactions says entertainment journalist Scott Menzel called the film a “masterpiece” and an “epic cinematic achievement.” The same report includes a more qualified response from Globe and Mail film writer Barry Hertz, who praised Ryan Gosling’s appeal but criticized the script’s pacing and endings, and objected to a plot point that he felt was left unresolved.

These comments are release-era reactions from named individuals, not a single consensus verdict. The Motion Picture Association’s March 10, 2026 article also collected positive early responses. Read praise such as “masterpiece” as a critic or viewer’s judgment, rather than a formal designation shared by every reviewer.
What is the film about?
Project Hail Mary is a science-fiction adaptation of Andy Weir’s 2021 novel. Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up aboard a spacecraft and finds himself facing a mission connected to a mysterious substance affecting the Sun. The premise combines a space mission with a scientific problem; the film’s central mystery is part of the story, so that summary avoids further plot details.
When was Project Hail Mary released?
The Motion Picture Association lists March 20, 2026, as the film’s theatrical release date. That date has passed. Where to watch it now depends on territory and current catalog availability; a Google Play editorial page promotes the film on Prime Video, but that listing does not establish that it is available in every country or remains available everywhere. Check the service in your region for current access.

Yes. The film is based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel, also titled Project Hail Mary. Readers who want the source story can look for the novel in print, Kindle, or audiobook editions; the Google Play editorial page points to Kindle and Audible formats. Edition and format availability varies by retailer and region.
