The Onion was sold by G/O Media to Global Tetrahedron on April 25, 2024. Jeff Lawson, the former Twilio CEO, was the buyer’s principal financial backer—not the sole buyer identified in the announcement. The sale price was not disclosed in the contemporaneous report.
Who bought The Onion?
The reported buyer was Global Tetrahedron, a newly formed company. Axios reported on April 25, 2024, that Jeff Lawson backed the company, alongside media veterans Ben Collins, Leila Brillson and Danielle Strle. The sale was announced by The Onion’s then-owner, G/O Media. Axios’s announcement report described Collins as CEO, Brillson as chief marketing officer and Strle as chief product officer.
That distinction matters: headlines may say Lawson bought The Onion, but the reported transaction was a sale to Global Tetrahedron, with Lawson as its principal backer. The reporting does not establish that he personally bought the publication alone.
How much did Jeff Lawson pay?
The sale price was not disclosed in Axios’s April 25, 2024 report. A separate figure that can be mistaken for a deal amount comes from a later interview: Lawson recalled saying, “I have $600 — who wants to help me buy this?” The New York Times presented this as a recollection of the group’s early interest, not as the transaction’s actual funding or purchase price. The New York Times report, published August 17, 2024, also quoted Lawson saying he hoped to own The Onion for the rest of his life.

What happened after the sale?
By August 2024, The New York Times reported that The Onion had begun distributing a monthly print edition for the first time in more than a decade, as a planned perk for online subscribers. The same report described a focus on paying customers and a reduction in some digital advertising. Those are details reported at that time; they do not establish the publication’s current subscription terms or print availability.

No. Global Tetrahedron’s later bid for Infowars was a separate matter, not part of The Onion’s April 2024 acquisition. A November 2024 legal-news report described the bid as covering Infowars intellectual property, social accounts, copyrights, trademarks and websites; it did not disclose a price and said final court approval was still outstanding at the time. Court News Service’s report on the Infowars auction concerns that distinct proceeding.
