The former Jim Henson Company lot is no longer up for sale. The Los Angeles Times reported on January 2, 2026, that musician John Mayer and filmmaker McG completed their $44 million purchase of the Hollywood property and renamed it Chaplin Studios. The transaction was for the studio lot—not The Jim Henson Company, which is now based at Radford Studio Center in Studio City.
What was sold—and what was not
The sale concerned the historic Hollywood studio property formerly known as the Jim Henson Company Lot. It did not include the operating Jim Henson Company. The company lists its current location at Radford Studio Center in Studio City.
The Los Angeles Times reported the finalized purchase price as $44 million. That is the newspaper’s reported figure; no public deed figure is established by the sources available here.
Who bought the lot?
The reported buyers are John Mayer and filmmaker McG, whose full name is Joseph McGinty Nichol. They chose the name Chaplin Studios, honoring Charlie Chaplin, who broke ground on the property more than a century ago, according to the Los Angeles Times’ January 2, 2026 report.

What is the property’s history?
The lot has been associated with Charlie Chaplin, later served as A&M Studios, and subsequently became known as the Jim Henson Company Lot. Its new reported name reconnects the site with its earlier Chaplin history.
What do the buyers plan to do with it?
The Los Angeles Times reported that Mayer and McG planned to invest $9 million in improvements, without making significant structural or stylistic changes. The report also said staff and artists who maintained offices or studios on the lot would stay. These were reported plans and arrangements, not confirmation that every improvement has been completed or that staffing has remained unchanged.

In October 2024, a Henson family spokesperson denied that the Church of Scientology was a prospective buyer and said the family was not then in escrow with any buyer. That statement described the situation at the time; it does not conflict with the later reported Mayer–McG purchase.
