Spoiler: Addam of Hull becomes Seasmoke’s rider by the end of House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 6, “Smallfolk.” After Rhaenyra’s attempt to have Ser Steffon Darklyn claim the dragon fails, Seasmoke pursues Addam in the woods. A message then reaches Dragonstone that the dragon has a rider. Sky’s episode explainer recounts the sequence.
How does Addam become Seasmoke’s rider?
Rhaenyra first tries to match Seasmoke with Ser Steffon Darklyn, but the attempt fails. Later, Seasmoke corners Addam in the woods. The episode presents the encounter as the dragon pursuing Addam, rather than Addam carrying out a clearly planned attempt to claim it. News of the new rider reaches Dragonstone afterward, as Sky’s episode explainer describes.

Who is Addam of Hull?
Addam is Alyn’s brother. TIME’s July 22, 2024 account identifies Addam, played by Clinton Liberty, as Corlys Velaryon’s illegitimate son, and describes him as the realm’s newest dragonrider. Sky likewise describes Addam and Alyn as Corlys’s bastard children. The episode’s family context connects Addam to House Velaryon, but it does not make every detail of his ancestry or the bond’s cause explicit.
Why can Addam ride Seasmoke?
Episode 6 settles who rides Seasmoke, but not exactly why the dragon accepts Addam. The Ringer’s July 24, 2024 discussion offers possible explanations—including a connection to Seasmoke’s former rider, unconfirmed Valyrian ancestry, or a broader possibility about who can ride dragons—but presents them as theories, not established answers. The episode itself does not confirm one explanation.
#1 Best Overall
- Brand: HBO
- House of the Dragon: The Complete First Season (DVD)
Fire & Blood, the source novel for the series, is useful background, but book details and rumors should not replace what the adaptation shows. TIME notes differences between the show’s presentation of the brothers’ Velaryon heritage and book lineage rumors; neither that context nor the episode establishes a definitive genetic or magical mechanism for Addam’s bond.
