Usher’s parents are Jonnetta Patton and Usher Raymond III. Jonnetta raised him and helped nurture his early interest in music, later supporting parts of his career as his manager. His father left the family home when Usher was young; they reconnected years later, and Usher said their conversations helped him find answers and a sense of resolution.
Who raised Usher?
Usher was born in Dallas in 1978 and grew up primarily with his mother, Jonnetta Patton. His family later lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee, before moving to Atlanta during his early teens. CNN’s 2005 account says Jonnetta moved him to Atlanta when he was 12; profiles differ in how they describe the earlier timing of his parents’ separation and the family’s moves, so the chronology should not be reduced to a precise sequence beyond those reported details. CNN; The Guardian; Forbes.

How did Jonnetta Patton support his music?
She recognized his talent in church
Jonnetta directed a youth choir at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church in Chattanooga, where Usher began singing at nine. In a 2005 CNN interview, she recalled: “At the age of nine, Usher was in my choir. I directed the choir, and I knew that he had talent but he was always such an outgoing kid that always reached for the stars.” In a separate 1998 interview, she said, “I noticed it at the age of nine. He started out in my youth choir.” CNN; San Diego Entertainer Magazine.
She advocated for his early career
Jonnetta supported Usher’s pursuit of performance and brought him to LaFace Records, according to her account to CNN. Label executive L.A. Reid said he offered Usher a recording contract after hearing him sing. Jonnetta also described the care involved in balancing parenting with career support. In 1998, she said: “I feel that every parent needs to pay close attention to what their child really wants in life and help them, even if it means denying yourself.” CNN; San Diego Entertainer Magazine.

She managed him for part of his career
Jonnetta took on the professional role of Usher’s manager as well as being his mother. The Guardian reported that their professional relationship ended in 2009. That is a historical detail, not an indication of her current role. Profiles also describe tensions around the demands Usher’s career placed on her later marriage; those accounts offer context, not a complete picture of the family’s private life. The Guardian; Forbes.
What happened to Usher’s father?
Biographical accounts say Usher Raymond III left the family home when Usher was young and that father and son had little contact for a period. The sources vary in describing exactly when the parents separated, and they do not establish his father’s reasons. The Guardian; Forbes.

Did Usher and his father reconcile?
They reconnected later in life. In a 2024 CBS interview, Usher said conversations with his father helped him understand and address some of the pain between them. He described feeling resolved after receiving answers: “I feel resolved about it because I did get some answers that I needed. I was conceived in love, regardless to whether my mother and father managed to make it.” He also recalled his father telling him, “Where I know I couldn’t be there for you, I prayed that God would.” CBS reported that Usher Raymond III died of liver disease.
