There is no well-supported, comparable all-time top ten of television showrunners in the available reporting. The figures often attached to this question mix personal-wealth estimates with annual earnings and contract values, while the people counted may be creators, producers or performers rather than showrunners alone.
Here are the strongest relevant published figures—and what they do and do not establish.

Why a definitive richest-showrunners ranking is hard to verify
“Showrunner” generally refers to the person overseeing a television series’ writing and production, but responsibilities and credits vary by show. A creator, executive producer, lead writer and showrunner may be the same person, but those titles are not interchangeable. Forbes’ description of Shonda Rhimes’ role, for example, characterizes a showrunner as overseeing the writing and production of each episode (Forbes, 2018).
A wealth ranking also needs to compare the same measure at roughly the same point in time. An estimate of personal net worth is not equivalent to income earned in a year or the headline value of a production deal. The available figures do not share a disclosed, consistent valuation method, so they cannot responsibly be assembled into a definitive top-ten order.

Published figures that provide useful context
| Person or group | Published figure | What it measures—and what it does not |
|---|---|---|
| Shonda Rhimes | Estimated $135 million, reported by Forbes in 2018 | A historical net-worth estimate, not a current valuation. Forbes also reported an estimated $100 million, four-year Netflix pact; that contract figure is not her net worth. (Forbes, 2018) |
| Matt Stone and Trey Parker | Estimated $1.2 billion each, reported by Forbes Australia in 2025 | A dated media estimate reported in connection with a reported $1.5 billion Paramount deal. The deal value is not an audited statement of either creator’s personal wealth. (Forbes Australia, 2025) |
| Five creators on Forbes’ 2024 list | More than $100 million each over the preceding 12 months | Reported earnings over a period, not all-time net worth. The list covers highest-paid showrunners in that period, not a lifetime wealth ranking. (Forbes, 2024) |
| Dick Wolf | Forbes profile excerpt gives a real-time wealth date of September 10, 2026; the amount was not available in the cited excerpt | The available excerpt identifies Wolf as the creator of Law & Order, but does not provide an amount suitable for comparison. (Forbes profile) |
How to read the best-known estimates
Shonda Rhimes: a dated net-worth estimate
Forbes estimated Rhimes’ net worth at $135 million in 2018 and described her then as the wealthiest female showrunner in the United States. That wording and number belong to the article’s 2018 reporting; they should not be treated as a current estimate. The same report’s $100 million Netflix pact was an estimated four-year deal, a different category of figure.
Matt Stone and Trey Parker: a deal-linked estimate
Forbes Australia reported in 2025 that Stone and Parker were estimated to be worth $1.2 billion each after a reported $1.5 billion Paramount deal. This is a publication’s estimate associated with a major deal, not a disclosed, audited personal balance sheet. It also concerns the creators of South Park; the figure alone does not settle whether they belong in a showrunner-only ranking.
Rank #2
Annual pay is not lifetime wealth
Forbes’ 2024 coverage said five creators on its highest-paid-showrunners list earned more than $100 million over the preceding 12 months. That can indicate extraordinary recent income, but it does not tell readers how much each person owns, owes, or accumulated over a career. It cannot be placed alongside net-worth estimates as if the numbers measured the same thing.

A Las Vegas News article names David Chase, Shonda Rhimes, Larry David, Chuck Lorre, Dick Wolf and Jerry Seinfeld with estimates, but its six-person scope and broader “creator” framing do not establish a sourced all-time top ten (Las Vegas News). The available reporting therefore supports selected examples, not a verified order of the ten richest people who meet a consistent definition of TV showrunner.

To make a reliable top ten, a ranking would need to define whether it includes only credited showrunners or also creators, executive producers and on-screen stars; use one measure, such as estimated personal net worth; set a valuation date; and source each person’s estimate independently. Without those rules and comparable evidence for every entrant, assigning a rank—or filling out ten names—would imply more certainty than the reporting supports.
