Market Realist’s September 26, 2023 list named ten screenwriters and attached estimated fortunes ranging from $7 million to $600 million. Those figures are publisher estimates, not verified disclosures, and another published ranking names a very different group. The list below is therefore best read as one snapshot—not a definitive ranking of Hollywood screenwriters’ wealth.
The 10 screenwriters on Market Realist’s 2023 list
Market Realist’s article, “The Pens That Built Fortunes: 10 Richest Screenwriters in Hollywood,” published September 26, 2023, gave the following estimates. The publisher describes the writers’ careers and credits but does not provide an auditable financial methodology for the figures.
| Screenwriter | Estimated fortune reported by Market Realist |
|---|---|
| Chuck Lorre | $600 million |
| Seth MacFarlane | $300 million |
| David E. Kelley | $250 million |
| Joss Whedon | $100 million |
| Aaron Sorkin | $90 million |
| Adam McKay | $40 million |
| David Koepp | $35 million |
| Terry Rossio | $20 million |
| Shane Black | $16 million |
| Jane Goldman | $7 million |
These are the estimates Market Realist reported in 2023, not confirmed personal wealth. Net worth is not the same as a writer’s annual earnings, the box-office gross of a film, or the total value of a production. The figures should not be treated as current, independently verified balances. Read Market Realist’s list.
Why published rankings disagree
MoneySnoop’s “Richest Screenwriters” page presents a markedly different top five: Steven Spielberg at $8 billion, J.K. Rowling at $1 billion, Peter Jackson at $998 million, Kevin Hart at $450 million, and Adam Sandler at $440 million. Those names and estimates differ substantially from Market Realist’s 2023 list. The comparison shows that published rankings do not agree; it does not establish which list is right. See MoneySnoop’s ranking.

The lists do not set out a consistent definition of “screenwriter” or a shared method for estimating wealth. A useful comparison would need to account for:
- Publication date: when the list was published or updated.
- Who qualifies: whether it includes writer-directors, television creators, or people whose screenwriting is one part of a broader career.
- What the figure measures: estimated net worth, annual income, or another financial measure.
- How it was calculated: whether the publisher discloses source data and a method that can be checked.
Without common criteria and transparent sourcing, a ranked list is a publisher’s estimate—not an authoritative league table. View the additional MoneySnoop ranking details.

How screenwriting contracts can affect earnings
A writer’s income may vary with the contract and distribution model. A July 7, 2025 report by the University of York and the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain describes UK screen-industry arrangements in which traditional broadcaster contracts can combine script fees, advances for subsequent use, and later residual payments. In the report’s interview sample, streaming work commonly involved buyouts: a one-time payment in exchange for future rights and possible residuals.
The report cautions against directly comparing the models: “Strictly speaking, it is challenging, if not impossible, to compare screenwriters’ earnings from traditional broadcasters, which employ a residual model, to those from SVODs, which often use a buyout model.” Its findings provide UK industry context; they do not establish Hollywood-wide pay practices or prove the personal wealth of anyone on either list. What the figures can—and cannot—tell you
The Market Realist list offers a dated set of estimates for ten named writers. The markedly different MoneySnoop ranking makes clear that the available lists do not settle who is richest, or in what order. Neither source provides independently audited current net-worth figures or a common, transparent methodology, so the exact ranking and current fortunes remain unverified.
