Shohei Ohtani’s parents are Kayoko Ohtani and Toru Ohtani (also rendered Tōru). Toru played amateur baseball, and Kayoko was a competitive badminton player. Both were involved in their son’s early sports life, and the most detailed accounts of that involvement come from a 2022 Nippon.com feature and a 2025 publisher’s biographical excerpt.
Who Shohei Ohtani’s parents are
Shohei Ohtani was born to Kayoko and Toru Ohtani on July 5, 1994, in Mizusawa, Iwate, Japan. A Los Angeles City Council resolution from May 17, 2024, which honored Ohtani with “Shohei Ohtani Day,” records the parents’ names and that birth date and place. Mizusawa is now part of the city of Ōshū in Iwate Prefecture, so older sources may use either name.
Toru Ohtani: amateur baseball player and youth coach
The Los Angeles Dodgers’ official player biography describes Toru as a baseball player for a semi-professional team sponsored by a Mitsubishi plant in Ōshū. Nippon.com’s March 4, 2022 feature, “Raising a Legend: Ohtani Shōhei and His Father’s Baseball Notebook,” describes him as a former outfielder for a corporate-sponsored amateur club. According to that feature, he coached Shohei’s teams from elementary school through junior high.
Kayoko Ohtani: competitive badminton player
The Dodgers’ biography identifies Kayoko as a competitive badminton player. Nippon.com reports that she took her son to badminton practice, where he was allowed to play with the equipment. She also played badminton with him, and in the same feature she recalled that he could swing a racket without any instruction.
How the parents shaped Shohei’s early sports life
The clearest picture of family life comes from two sources: the Nippon.com feature, which draws on interviews with the family, and the 2025 Penguin Random House excerpt from the book Who Is Shohei Ohtani? Both describe parental involvement in concrete terms.

Baseball coaching and the shared notebook
Toru gave Shohei a glove when he was five or six and taught him hitting, fielding, and pitching, according to the publisher’s excerpt. He also kept a notebook in which he wrote comments after games and practices. Shohei read those notes and added his own. Nippon.com’s account frames the notebook as central to how father and son communicated about baseball, and Ohtani recalled that they spent more time together on the field than anywhere else before high school.
Nippon.com also quotes Shohei saying his father prioritized the team over giving him special treatment. That detail matters for reading the coaching story accurately: Toru’s role was that of a team coach, not a private trainer.
Badminton, swimming, and play
The publisher’s excerpt says Shohei sometimes played badminton with his mother and took swimming lessons. Kayoko’s own account, as reported by Nippon.com, is simple: “I would let Shōhei play with the equipment.” Her description of him as “a normal baby” is her personal recollection, not a clinical assessment.

He said, “Swimming uses the entire body.” He added, “The motions promote elasticity of joints and muscles. It certainly played a factor in Shōhei’s relaxed pitching and hitting styles.” That is Toru’s view of how swimming influenced his son’s delivery, not an independently established finding from sports science.

What the sources do and do not establish
The sources document parental encouragement, coaching, and shared activities. They do not establish that the parents alone caused Shohei’s later success, and they do not provide a method for raising elite athletes. Toru’s coaching, Kayoko’s badminton, and the family’s play are best read as background to a childhood in a sporting household, not as a hereditary or training formula.
The parents’ names, sports backgrounds, and the birth record come from official or documented sources. The childhood anecdotes come from a single feature and a single publisher’s account, so they describe the family’s own telling of events rather than a full picture of their private life.
