The Library of Congress catalog describes a 2008 oral history in which Ayers Allen discussed her childhood in Chester, South Carolina; her education at Brainerd Institute and Bennett College; her marriage and divorce; writing poetry and raising her children; living in Mexico; and community arts work. The finding aid identifies these topics but does not itself provide the full interview transcript.
For a direct encounter with her poetry, Hawk is a relevant further read. A listing describes the Clemson University Press paperback edition as published in 2023 and says the poem was first published in 1957. The work is Ayers Allen’s poetry, not a biography of her daughters.

Who was Andrew A. Allen?
Dr. Andrew A. Allen was Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad’s father and worked as a dentist. Rashad gave that description in her 2023 PBS interview. The interview excerpt does not specify a dental specialty, so a more specific title is not established by that source.
