Profiles by AOL and KidsCo describe the twins’ birth via surrogate after Bassett and Vance spent seven years pursuing IVF. This is the family background as reported by those outlets, not a basis for generalizing about fertility treatment or other families’ experiences.
Growing up with music and mutual respect
In anecdotes reproduced by AOL from interviews with Vulture and People, Bassett recalled her daughter looking to her as an example and said both twins played piano, rapped, and played guitar. These are accounts of their childhood interests, not evidence of what they do now.

A 2019 Good Morning America report quoted Bassett describing how she taught her children about respect and consent. Speaking about her son wrestling with his sister, she said: “When a girl tells you stop, stop. When a girl tells you no, she means no.”
Different parenting roles
In a 2022 interview with Glamour, Bassett described herself as the “good time” parent and Courtney as the “helicopter” parent. It was her lighthearted description of their roles, not a detailed account of the twins’ current relationship with either parent.

What are Bronwyn and Slater doing now?
Us Weekly reported in 2024 that the twins had started college. An AOL profile published in August 2026 reported that Bronwyn was attending Harvard and Slater Yale. Those are dated secondary-source reports; current enrollment has not been independently confirmed here. The reports do not establish either twin’s career plans, and Bassett has said the parents are not pressuring them to follow their careers.
The same AOL profile reported that Bronwyn appeared at Le Bal des Débutantes in 2025. That public-event appearance is a specific reported milestone, not a comprehensive picture of her life.

How the parents met
Bassett and Vance met as students at Yale’s School of Drama in the 1980s, reconnected in 1994, and married in 1997, according to Us Weekly. The outlet identifies their 2007 coauthored book, Friends: A Love Story, as a story about the couple’s romance—not a definitive account of Bronwyn and Slater.

After Bassett did not win the 2023 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, she later described it as a moment to teach her children about grace and perseverance. KidsCo attributed this reflection to her March 2024 appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark. It is one reported parenting anecdote, not evidence that the twins were pursuing any particular path.
