The question a lot of fans have been asking in online discussions is what his commentary actually adds to a broadcast. My answer is that his style is built for moments rather than for the match, and a WWE booth needs a commentator who serves the match first. On that narrower test, he should stay away from WWE commentary.
The standard I am applying
This is an opinion about fit, not a finding that Ventura is universally disliked or bad at his job. I judge commentary against three standards. First, it should help viewers follow what is happening in the ring. Second, it should preserve the stakes of a match, so that a finish or a title change still feels earned. Third, it should work with the tone of the broadcast it sits inside. These are my criteria, not measured standards, but they are the ones I would expect any broadcast team to meet.
What WWE’s own record says
WWE’s official profile places Ventura among its announcers from 1985 to 1990 and characterizes his commentary as controversial and candid. That is the company’s own summary of his booth work, paraphrased here rather than quoted. It establishes that his style was distinctive and sometimes divisive, which is the starting point for any argument about fit.
A more useful comparison comes from WWE’s retrospective titled “Jim Ross on Jesse Ventura, Jim Cornette.” It discusses Ventura alongside Jim Cornette and describes Cornette’s preference for treating wrestling seriously. Placed side by side, the two approaches show how much a commentator’s framing changes what a viewer takes from a match. Cornette’s approach keeps the wrestling at the center. Ventura’s approach puts the commentator’s personality at the center. Neither is a strawman, and the contrast is the clearest way to see the argument.

Where the style earns its keep
The case for Ventura is real. His candor produces lines people remember, and his willingness to take a position makes a broadcast feel less like a script. Viewers in an online discussion on r/Wrasslin, a thread posted May 25, 2025 titled “We’ve had a few SNME’s now, what’re we thinking of venturas commentary,” praised his distinctive and entertaining style. That thread is anecdotal. It shows that some viewers enjoy him, not how viewers as a whole feel.
Entertainment is a legitimate reason to watch a wrestling broadcast. The question is whether it is the only reason, or whether it competes with the job the commentator is there to do.

Where it stops fitting
Each of the four tensions below is a trade-off. Ventura’s approach wins some of them, but the balance matters across a full night of television, not in a single clip.
| Criterion | What a memorable personality moment gives | What a full broadcast needs | Where Ventura’s style sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clarity about match action | A quotable take that viewers repeat afterward | Clear calls on holds, counters, and momentum so the match is followable | Personality can crowd out play-by-play clarity |
| Preserving the stakes | A provocative angle that makes a heel feel dangerous | Treating each result as meaningful without undercutting the next segment | Provocation can make outcomes feel like jokes |
| Broadcast tone | A nostalgic character performance | A tone that matches the current program and the segments around it | Character work can pull against the present show’s tone |
| Usefulness across a broadcast | Highlights that work as standalone clips | Steady value over three hours, including quiet stretches | Strong peaks, uneven stretches between them |
The first two rows carry most of my argument. A commentator who makes himself the story can give a viewer a great clip and still leave that viewer less sure what just happened in the ring. A heel-leaning voice can sharpen a rivalry, but it can also make a serious finish feel like a punchline. The last two rows are about consistency. Ventura’s best moments are memorable, but a broadcast is judged on the hours between them.

- Portable and Quick to Assemble: All parts could be stored in a provided carrying bag for convenient transport. Assemble or disassemble in just 2 minutes for quick, effortless use.
What is not established
The sources I could check do not establish Ventura’s current WWE contract or whether he holds a regular commentary role today. A 2024 report in Pro Wrestling Dot Net discussed the possibility of color-commentary work, and a later fan discussion addressed his appearances. Neither settles his status, so I do not treat him as currently assigned to any show. My argument does not depend on that status. It applies to any WWE booth where he would be the regular voice.
Reaction evidence is limited in the same way. The online discussions I found reflect individual opinions. They are not a survey, and they do not show that fans broadly agree on either side.

Where the broadcast reaches viewers
Context matters for who hears the commentary. The Associated Press reported on January 3, 2025 that WWE Raw began its Netflix partnership that month, and listed the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Latin America among the territories where Netflix carried the show. That report is from January 2025, so territories and availability may have changed. Check Netflix’s current listings for your region before assuming where Raw streams.
Verdict
Ventura is good at being memorable, and that is a real skill. But a WWE broadcast needs a commentator who keeps the match clear, the stakes intact, and the tone steady across the whole show. On those tests, his style works against the program more often than it helps it. If WWE wants his voice, it should be used in a bounded, clearly framed role where his personality is the point, not as the regular frame for the wrestling. That is my judgment, and reasonable viewers may weigh the entertainment value more heavily.
