Which Women Have the Most Oscar Wins? What the Academy’s Records Confirm

Edith Head’s eight Costume Design Oscars are confirmed by the Academy. A definitive current top 15 requires a consistent count across categories, award types and shared credits.

The Academy’s available records do not establish a reliable current ranking of the 15 women with the most Oscar wins. They do confirm that costume designer Edith Head won eight Academy Awards, while older Academy statistics record Katharine Hepburn with four acting wins. Those are different measures, and neither supports a definitive all-category top 15.

Why there is no verified top 15 here

A current ranking requires a person-by-person count from the Academy’s complete awards database, along with clear rules for what counts as a win. The Academy says its database is complete through the 2025 film awards, presented at the 98th ceremony on March 15, 2026. Its published category-statistics hub, however, describes figures through the 97th Awards, and the specific acting, costume-design and trivia sheets available for comparison stop at the 88th Awards.

Those sources cannot be combined into a current, comprehensive all-category leaderboard. A ranking based on older category sheets could omit later wins; a ranking based on acting alone would answer a different question. The 15-person premise therefore remains unverified rather than a list that can responsibly be filled in by inference. Consult the Academy Awards Database for the official record.

What the Academy’s records do confirm

Edith Head: eight Costume Design wins

The Academy’s profile for costume designer Edith Head confirms eight Academy Awards for Costume Design. This is a documented category-specific total and the strongest directly verified all-category figure in the available records; it should not be mistaken for a complete ranking of women across every category. Katharine Hepburn: four acting wins

An Academy acting-statistics sheet updated through the 88th Awards in 2016 records Katharine Hepburn with four acting wins. It lists Ingrid Bergman and Meryl Streep with three each. These are historical figures from that sheet, not a current comparison of all Oscar categories or a present-day ranking. See the Academy’s acting statistics.

Costume design’s historical leaders

The Academy’s Costume Design statistics sheet, also updated through the 88th Awards, lists Edith Head with eight wins, Irene Sharaff with five and Milena Canonero with four. These totals describe Costume Design, not overall career wins across the Academy’s categories. See the Academy’s Costume Design statistics.

What “most Oscar wins” needs to mean

Before comparing people, a ranking needs a consistent counting method. The Academy’s records include awards with multiple credited recipients, while its statistical materials distinguish competitive awards from noncompetitive ones. A usable leaderboard would need to state how it treats both, rather than silently mixing unlike totals.

  • All categories or acting only: an acting tally cannot be compared directly with an all-category total.
  • Competitive or noncompetitive awards: honorary awards and other noncompetitive recognition need an explicit inclusion rule.
  • Solo or shared credits: decide whether every credited recipient receives a full win when an award is shared, and how group or country credits are handled.
  • Wins or nominations: nominations are not wins and should not be included in a win total.
  • Record cutoff: identify the ceremony through which the database was checked; older statistics sheets have their own stated cutoff.

The 2026 ceremony illustrates why the credit rule matters: the Academy’s ceremony page credits Fran Walsh among the Best Picture producers for the winning film. Its records also name current winners including Jessie Buckley and Amy Madigan. These entries are useful reminders that credits and totals can change, but they do not by themselves establish an all-time top 15. View the Academy’s 2026 ceremony records.

Milestones that are not an all-time ranking

An older Academy trivia sheet notes that Hepburn won consecutive acting awards in 1967 and 1968, and that Fran Walsh received three awards at the 2003 ceremony. These are notable milestones, but a consecutive-win record or a single-ceremony tally does not establish a person’s place in a current lifetime leaderboard. The sheet is updated through the 88th Awards. See the Academy’s historical trivia statistics.

How to verify a current ranking

Use the Academy’s database as the underlying record, then apply and publish one counting rule consistently. Check each person’s credited wins across categories, separate competitive awards from honorary or other noncompetitive honors, and document how shared credits are counted. State the final ceremony included. Without that reconciliation, the accurate answer is limited: Head’s eight Costume Design wins and the older acting and category figures above are confirmed, but a current top 15 is not.
