Discovery (WBD). Its proposed deal fell through, and Paramount Skydance completed its acquisition of WBD on October 6, 2026. The combined company is called Skydance. Its portfolio includes Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema, DC Studios, CBS Studios, Warner Bros. Television and Skydance’s own film, television and game operations.
Did Netflix buy Warner Bros.?
No. Netflix and WBD had negotiated a proposed transaction for Warner Bros.’ studio and streaming assets, including HBO and HBO Max, after a planned separation of Discovery Global. In February 2026, WBD’s board determined that Paramount Skydance’s proposal was superior. Netflix said it would not raise its offer, and WBD terminated the Netflix agreement on February 27, 2026, when it entered into an agreement with Paramount Skydance. WBD’s SEC filing records a $2.8 billion termination fee paid to Netflix in connection with that termination.

Paramount Skydance closed its acquisition of WBD on October 6, 2026, and announced that the combined company would be named Skydance. The completed deal was therefore Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of WBD—not a Netflix-Warner Bros. merger.
Which studios are under Skydance now?
The named film and television studios span the legacy Paramount and WBD businesses as well as Skydance’s operations. Their inclusion under common ownership does not mean the labels have been dissolved or combined into one studio.

What happened to HBO Max and Paramount+?
At the time of the post-close announcement, HBO Max, Paramount+, discovery+ and Pluto TV were listed as separate services in the portfolio. Skydance said its direct-to-consumer streaming products would unify into a single service “over time,” but gave no timetable. The announcement does not establish that the apps have already combined, which brand will remain, or when catalogs or prices might change.

At closing, Skydance announced a minimum of 30 theatrical films annually and a minimum 45-day theatrical window. These are company commitments, not evidence of a release history or independently verified future delivery. The company also described a portfolio of 180-plus television shows and series; that figure is not an annual production promise.
The U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division said on June 12, 2026, after an eight-month investigation, that it had determined the transaction was not likely to harm competition or American consumers in streaming video on demand, linear television, or studio development, production and theatrical film distribution. That is the agency’s conclusion about its review, not a guarantee about every future market outcome.
