On Saturday Night Live, “double duty” means one episode credits the same performer or act as both host and musical guest—not simply a host singing in a sketch. A complete current roster is not established by the episode records reviewed here, but official Season 50 listings confirm two recent examples: Charli XCX and Timothée Chalamet.
What counts as double duty?
The host and the credited musical guest must be the same performer or act in the same episode. A musical monologue, a song in a sketch, or a cameo does not qualify if someone else is credited as the musical guest. This distinction matters because an episode’s official role credits—not a performer’s musical résumé—determine whether it belongs on a roster.
Confirmed recent examples from Season 50
NBCUniversal’s published Season 50 schedule lists the same name in the host and musical-guest columns for these episodes:
| Episode date | Host | Musical guest |
|---|---|---|
| November 16, 2024 | Charli XCX | Charli XCX |
| January 25, 2025 | Timothée Chalamet | Timothée Chalamet |
These are examples confirmed by the official schedule, not a complete roster. See NBCUniversal’s Season 50 schedule and anniversary guide.

Who was first?
A compiled secondary reference identifies Paul Simon as the first performer to host and serve as musical guest, on October 18, 1975, the show’s second episode. That is a reported historical claim, rather than one independently confirmed here against the episode record.
Why a definitive “every host” list needs episode checks
SNL Archives provides episode pages with guest and role information, as well as separate host and musical-guest views. That makes each episode the appropriate unit of verification: a complete roster should record the date and the name as billed in both roles, including group acts. The archive’s landing page explains those records, but the full episode archive has not been audited here.
A mutable secondary compilation reports 47 double-duty episodes. Because that count has not been reproduced through episode-by-episode verification and can change as new episodes air, it should not be treated as a definitive current total. The 2019 Yahoo Entertainment / Entertainment Weekly roundup is likewise a historical list lead, not a comprehensive current roster.
