Rob Reiner said Stand by Me was the film that meant the most to him. He described it as closest to his personality and sensibility—not necessarily his best film.
Why did Reiner single out Stand by Me?
In an interview with Piers Morgan, Reiner was asked which of his works he would most like to be remembered for. He joked that people love all their children, “even the bad ones,” then named Stand by Me: “I always say, Stand by Me, to me, is the one that meant the most to me.” Us Weekly reported the exchange.
Reiner explained that the film “really is an extension of my personality and my sensibility,” adding that it has “a mixture of humor and melancholy and emotion” and is “closest to me of all of the films I’ve done.” ABC News also reported this explanation.
Did he call it his best film?
No. Reiner explicitly separated personal meaning from a judgment of quality: “I don’t know that it’s the best; it’s for other people to decide.” His answer identifies the film he felt most personally connected to, not a definitive ranking of his work or a claim about what critics or audiences consider his best.

What is Stand by Me about?
Released in 1986, Stand by Me is based on Stephen King’s novella The Body. It follows boys who set out to find the body of a missing friend; the story is framed as a writer recalling a childhood journey with friends. The cast includes Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell. Us Weekly’s account and ABC News’ overview identify the film and its premise.

In a separate conversation on Armchair Expert, Reiner gave a related explanation: the film was the first project he made that felt far removed from the work of his father, Carl Reiner, and it reflected his own personality. He described its humor alongside melancholy and nostalgia. That is a separate interview and should not be conflated with his Piers Morgan wording. The transcript is available at Happy Scribe.
