Start with Nas’s Illmatic and Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt. These debut-era albums make a rewarding first pair: Illmatic is concise and grounded in vivid New York scenes, while Reasonable Doubt introduces Jay-Z’s dense writing about ambition, risk and the moral complications of success. From there, move to It Was Written and The Blueprint for broader sounds, then listen to Stillmatic and The Black Album for a later-career comparison. This is a practical route, not a definitive ranking.

If you only have room for four albums, make the first pair your foundation and add It Was Written and The Blueprint. If you want all six, the sequence below gives you a way to hear changing styles as well as the context for the artists’ 2001 exchange. You do not need to know the feud in advance, and you do not have to treat the albums as a contest.

Start with these two albums

Nas — Illmatic

Illmatic is the clearest starting point if you want to hear Nas’s writing at close range. Its detailed, scene-setting lyrics make the city and the people in it feel specific rather than generic. The original album has ten tracks, according to Sony Music’s official discography, so it is also a relatively concise introduction. Apple Music describes the debut’s sound as jazz-heavy hip-hop and lists the album in its catalog. Nas on Apple Music · Album listing

As you listen, notice how the album’s compact scale supports its close-up feel: it offers a focused introduction rather than asking you to work through a sprawling catalog. Its New York setting is not just background scenery in this recommendation; the appeal is the specificity of the writing and the sense of a lived-in point of view. Apple Music’s description of its jazz-heavy hip-hop sound gives you another useful listening cue: pay attention to how the production helps establish atmosphere, alongside the lyrics.

UMPG lists Illmatic as platinum. Treat that as release and career context rather than a measure of whether it should be your favorite Nas album. The stronger reason to start here is that its ten-track original sequence gives a newcomer a concentrated first impression of his writing and sound.

Jay-Z — Reasonable Doubt

Pair it with Jay-Z’s debut, Reasonable Doubt, rather than treating the two records as interchangeable introductions. Apple Music’s album description emphasizes Jay’s writing about the perils and rewards of the drug trade, ambition, and the moral tension around success. That perspective gives the album a different narrative voice from Nas’s detailed street scenes. Apple Music album listing

The useful comparison is not simply that both albums introduce New York rappers. Listen for the kind of narrator each artist builds. On Reasonable Doubt, the frame described by Apple Music includes risk, reward and the compromises attached to ambition; that gives the songs a tension between wanting success and reckoning with its cost. Put it beside Illmatic and ask how each rapper turns street experience into a distinct voice.

Listen to the two records as complete albums, paying attention to how each rapper builds a point of view—not only to which tracks are most immediately catchy. If one album’s writing or sound grabs you more, follow that artist’s branch of the route first. You can also take the pair in either order: there is no requirement to hear Nas before Jay-Z or vice versa.

Next, hear how their sounds broaden

Nas — It Was Written

After Illmatic, It Was Written is a useful next step because it moves Nas toward a more cinematic and crossover-facing sound. Universal Music Publishing Group describes it as his breakthrough double-platinum album and names “Street Dreams” and “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)” among its notable songs. The shift is useful to hear as a change in scope: the storytelling remains central, but the album reaches toward a broader audience. Universal Music Publishing Group’s Nas page

This is the right follow-up if you want to hear a change rather than a repeat of the debut. Start with one of the named songs, then listen through the album and compare its more cinematic, crossover-facing direction with the closer, concise introduction of Illmatic. The two records can both be entry points, but hearing them in that order makes the shift in scope easier to notice.

UMPG describes It Was Written as double-platinum and reports that it reached number one R&B for seven weeks and number one pop for four weeks. Those figures are publisher-reported context; the page does not specify a chart database or exact dates, so they are not necessary to decide whether the album suits your taste. They do help explain why this is an important next stop for listeners curious about Nas’s broader reach.

Jay-Z — The Blueprint

The Blueprint is a strong next Jay-Z album because it brings together battle tracks, accessible singles, playful moments and vulnerability. Apple Music highlights “Takeover,” “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” and “Song Cry,” and points to the album’s use of classic rock and soul samples. Those contrasting elements make it a broad entry point: it can work whether you arrive for the singles, the production or the more personal writing. Apple Music album listing

For a newcomer, that mix makes The Blueprint a flexible listening choice. “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” is one of the accessible singles Apple Music singles out; “Takeover” has a battle-track role in the feud context; “Song Cry” is a place to hear the vulnerability Apple Music identifies. Rather than assuming the album has one mood, use those songs as signposts for its range, then hear the rest of the record around them. The classic rock and soul samples also give you a production contrast with the jazz-heavy sound Apple Music describes on Illmatic.

Apple Music’s editorial description says The Blueprint was “hailed as a classic from the get-go.” That is the service’s editorial assessment, not a quote from Jay-Z or a named critic. The album was released on September 11, 2001, a date that also places its arrival in a consequential moment in U.S. history. The 2001 date matters to this guide for another reason too: Stillmatic arrived in the same year, and the two albums are linked by the exchange between “Takeover” and “Ether.”

Use the 2001 feud as context, not as the whole story

Nas — Stillmatic

Listen to “Ether” on Stillmatic after “Takeover” on The Blueprint to understand the albums’ connection to the Jay-Z–Nas feud. Apple Music identifies “Ether” as a direct response to Jay-Z and describes Stillmatic as Nas’s return to a non-commercial, introspective and street-oriented style. The battle tracks make the exchange audible, but the albums are more than replies to each other; give the rest of each record room to stand on its own. Apple Music album listing

A practical mini-route is to hear “Takeover,” then “Ether,” then return to each album in full. This gives you enough context to recognize the response without making the diss tracks the only reason to listen. Afterward, compare the different jobs the albums do: The Blueprint is described as a broad record of battles, singles, playfulness and vulnerability, while Apple Music frames Stillmatic as a return to introspective, street-oriented rhyming. The exchange is a useful historical thread, not a verdict on either artist’s catalog.

Universal Music Publishing Group describes Stillmatic as platinum in 2001. That milestone supplies some release-era context, but it does not settle which album is better or more important. UMPG’s Nas page

Jay-Z — The Black Album

Follow with The Black Album if you want more personal writing from Jay-Z about family, identity, public life and aging in hip-hop. Apple Music points to “December 4th,” “99 Problems” and “Moment of Clarity” as key tracks. It is a useful counterpoint to the ambition and street-level perspective of Reasonable Doubt, and to the public battle context around The Blueprint. Apple Music album listing

It makes a sensible later stop because it changes the question you are asking of Jay-Z’s music. Instead of beginning with the debut’s tension around ambition or the back-and-forth surrounding The Blueprint, listen for how family, identity and public life enter the picture. The named tracks offer a starting point, but the album is most useful in this guide as a full-album comparison: set it beside Reasonable Doubt and consider how the perspective has changed by 2003.

Across the six albums, the route moves from two debuts (Illmatic in 1994 and Reasonable Doubt in 1996), through broader follow-ups (It Was Written, also 1996, and The Blueprint in 2001), to the linked 2001 feud-era record and Jay-Z’s 2003 personal reflection. The dates are helpful orientation, not a claim that every listener should follow a strict chronology.

Choose your route by what you want to hear

  • For vivid narrative detail: Begin with Illmatic, then continue to It Was Written and Stillmatic. That sequence lets you compare Nas’s concise debut with a more cinematic, crossover-facing follow-up and the later return to introspective, street-oriented writing described by Apple Music.
  • For Jay-Z’s writing and changing perspective: Start with Reasonable Doubt, then hear The Blueprint and The Black Album. You move from ambition and moral tension to a wider mix of accessible singles, battles and vulnerability, then to themes of family, identity and aging.
  • For the feud’s central exchange: Hear “Takeover” on The Blueprint and “Ether” on Stillmatic, then explore the rest of both albums. Apple Music identifies “Ether” as a direct response, while the full albums offer more than the exchange.
  • For a compact first commitment: Choose Illmatic; Sony Music’s discography lists ten tracks on the original album. Do not assume every digital or reissued edition has the same track listing or duration.
  • For a broader, single-friendly entry: Try The Blueprint, whose album highlights include “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” alongside battle and introspective tracks.
  • For production contrasts: Put Apple Music’s jazz-heavy description of Illmatic next to its note about classic rock and soul samples on The Blueprint. This is a straightforward way to compare sonic palette without needing to know either artist’s full history.

There is no provably best order for every listener. The six-album sequence balances each artist’s debut, a broader follow-up, and a later record, while leaving room to branch toward the style you prefer. Compare the albums along a few simple lines: the narrator and point of view, the production palette, the balance of introspective tracks and accessible singles, the career moment, and how much listening time you want to commit. Those questions are more useful than trying to settle an objective ranking that the available evidence cannot establish.

Availability and editions

Apple Music catalog pages list the recommended albums, but music catalogs differ by country and can change. Check your local service for availability. Track listings, durations and editions may vary across releases; Sony Music confirms ten tracks for the original Illmatic, but a runtime should be checked against the specific edition you plan to hear. Sony Music’s Illmatic discography

If you prefer a physical copy, Illmatic is a natural album to seek out because it is the first recommendation here. Still, verify the exact listing, pressing, format and availability before buying: this research confirms the album’s release but does not establish a particular vinyl edition or retailer listing. Likewise, an Apple Music listing confirms catalog availability when checked, not that the album is available in every territory or through every service. No particular streaming plan, affiliate offer or special purchase is required to follow this route.

Before you start, pick the edition you actually intend to hear, especially if you are comparing track counts or runtimes. The ten-track count applies to the original Illmatic as listed by Sony; streaming pages may surface alternate editions. This guide avoids giving a total listening-time estimate because the available evidence does not verify one fixed duration across editions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Nas album should I listen to first?

Start with Illmatic. It is Nas’s debut, Sony Music lists ten tracks on the original album, and Apple Music describes its sound as jazz-heavy hip-hop. It is a concise introduction to his detailed, scene-setting writing.

Which Jay-Z album should I listen to first?

Begin with Reasonable Doubt for Jay-Z’s debut-era writing about ambition, risk and the moral tension around success. If you would rather begin with a broader mix of singles, production and emotional registers, try The Blueprint next.

What four albums should a new listener hear first?

A useful four-album route is Nas’s Illmatic, Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt, Nas’s It Was Written and Jay-Z’s The Blueprint. It gives you the two debut-era introductions and then a chance to hear each artist move toward a broader sound.

Do I need to listen to the albums in release order?

No. The suggested sequence is a practical listening route, not a required chronology or an objective ranking. You can start with either artist, or choose by whether you want narrative detail, production variety, singles or feud context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which albums contain “Takeover” and “Ether”?

“Takeover” is on Jay-Z’s The Blueprint; “Ether” is on Nas’s Stillmatic. Apple Music identifies “Ether” as a direct response to Jay-Z. Hearing both tracks before exploring the full albums gives the feud context without reducing either record to the battle.

Are the albums available on every streaming service?

Not necessarily. Apple Music catalog pages list these albums, but availability can differ by country and change over time. Check your local service and the specific edition, since track listings and durations can vary.

The Bottom Line

For a first listen, pair Nas’s Illmatic with Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt. Add It Was Written and The Blueprint to hear each artist broaden his sound, then use Stillmatic and The Black Album for a later comparison. Treat the feud as context, not the whole story, and follow whichever writing or production speaks to you.
