In the best-known U.S. version of the old convention, a man’s single right-ear piercing was associated with being gay. But the rule varied by place and was disputed even in the 1980s. Today, an earring’s placement cannot reliably tell you someone’s sexuality.
What was the “gay ear” convention?
The familiar U.S. saying “Left is right and right is wrong” referred to the idea that a man wearing one earring in his right earlobe was gay. The Point, a piercing-industry publication, places this convention in 1970s and 1980s America, when being openly gay could carry risks such as losing work or housing, straining family ties, or facing physical danger. In that context, discreet signals could help people recognize one another while limiting exposure. The Point’s account describes the convention retrospectively, rather than as a universal code.
Why did the meaning vary?
The supposed rule was never stable. The Point notes that some places reversed the sides and that interpretations became muddled. A 1984 archival exchange also preserves competing explanations: one response treated asymmetrical earrings as fashion with no sexual meaning, while another repeated the claim that the sides carried meanings within gay male culture. That disagreement is evidence of a contested convention, not proof of a single agreed code. The archived 1984 document records the period discussion.
The convention also shifted as men’s earrings became more common and more closely associated with fashion. Later recollections differ: some people remember the rule, while others recall different versions or understood earrings chiefly as style. What does an earring mean today?
There is no dependable modern rule by which a particular ear identifies someone as gay. As piercings became more popular, their connection to underground signaling weakened. An earring may be fashion, self-expression, a personal signal, or simply jewelry; its placement alone does not establish a person’s identity.
Some people may choose a piercing as a personal expression or a nod to the convention’s history. That meaning belongs to the individual wearing it. Cooper Gelb, interviewed by MEL Magazine, put the contemporary perception this way: “Gayness has a variety of complicated nonverbal signal languages, but earrings aren’t really one of them.” This is Gelb’s observation, not a research finding.
