Some actors perform selected stunts, but “does all their own stunts” is rarely an accurate, production-wide label. The clearest examples here are specific: Tom Cruise performed major action for Mission: Impossible – Fallout, while Ryan Gosling said he did almost none of his stunts in The Fall Guy. Neither example proves a rule about every film in an actor’s career.
Why “does all their own stunts” is a misleading label
Action scenes are collaborative. Actors may train for and perform particular sequences while stunt performers handle other work, including specialized or higher-risk movements. Stunt coordinators plan and rehearse action with directors and actors; the final choice of who performs a movement depends on the scene, preparation, safety, and production requirements.
That makes a career-wide tally difficult to support. The accounts below describe particular films, reported preferences, or an actor’s approach to action. They do not establish that anyone performs every stunt, or that an actor categorically refuses stunts. No representative statistic in these accounts measures what share of actors’ stunts are performed by doubles.
Actors reported performing or favoring selected stunts
Tom Cruise: major practical action in Mission: Impossible – Fallout
The HALO sequence in the 2018 film is a well-documented example of Cruise performing a major stunt. Stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood told Reuters that Cruise followed the training schedule fully. Eastwood said he spent 500 hours in a wind tunnel working out the sequence’s movements; that figure is Eastwood’s preparation time, not Cruise’s. Eastwood also reported that the production made 150 jumps in Abu Dhabi and used 102 takes to refine the sequence.

At a Seoul press conference, Cruise described his preference for practical action: “I like practical action in films. And we’re able to put the camera in places that you couldn’t. And there’s just a different feel that a movie has when it’s real.” Yonhap also reported that Cruise said he did his own franchise stunts without a double for realism, and noted that he broke an ankle while filming a jump between buildings. These are accounts of specific action and a stated motivation—not proof that he does every stunt in every film.
Chris Hemsworth and Channing Tatum: reported preference, not an all-stunts record
A stunt performer interviewed by TIME in 2015 named Hemsworth and Tatum as actors who like doing their own stunts. That is a reported preference, not a complete record of their work. The same performer said they doubled Tatum on Jupiter Ascending, a useful reminder that an actor’s interest in performing action can coexist with the use of a double.

Jackie Chan: action performer who relies on a stunt team
In a 2006 CBS News report, Chan discussed safety rules, insurance, and protective equipment, as well as his growing involvement in planning action for his American films. He said: “I use my own stunt team because they have experience and I trust them to make the action and stunts safe.” His comments describe a team-based approach; they do not support the claim that he performs every stunt himself. They also reflect his account at that time, rather than a universal statement about current production practices.
An example of extensive doubling: Ryan Gosling in The Fall Guy
At the film’s 2024 SXSW premiere, Gosling said he did almost none of his own stunts in The Fall Guy. The Associated Press reported that five stunt performers doubled him in the movie. This is unusually direct evidence about one production, but it should not be stretched into a claim that Gosling refuses stunts generally or never performs action in other films.

Why productions use stunt performers
Planning and specialized preparation
Stunts are designed with input from coordinators, directors, actors, and specialist performers. For Fallout, Eastwood described developing action with director Christopher McQuarrie and Cruise, followed by structured preparation. Training may help an actor perform a sequence, but it does not eliminate the need for a stunt team or determine who should perform every movement.
Risk, insurance, and the consequences of an injury
A stunt performer interviewed by TIME said insurance can prevent actors from performing stunts: an injury could halt production and disrupt the work of many people. That is one production consideration, not a rule that applies identically to every film. Chan, in his 2006 comments to CBS, described frustration with some Hollywood safety practices while also emphasizing trust in his experienced team. His perspective is dated and should not be read as a case against safety procedures.

A double is a collaborator, not a measure of commitment
Stunt performers bring specialized skills to a production and may take on movements selected for their expertise or risk. Their involvement does not show that an actor lacks commitment; it reflects how action is planned and shared. Gosling’s The Fall Guy example, like Tatum’s reported use of a double on Jupiter Ascending, makes clear why “does their own stunts” cannot stand in for a full account of who did what.

What the evidence can—and cannot—answer
- Does Tom Cruise do his own stunts? Reporting documents him performing major action, including the Fallout HALO sequence. That does not establish that he performs every stunt.
- Which actors use stunt doubles? The examples here include Tatum on Jupiter Ascending and Gosling in The Fall Guy; the latter used five stunt performers to double him.
- Can these examples produce a ranked list of actors who do all their stunts or refuse them? No. They do not provide career-wide stunt counts, a representative share performed by doubles, or evidence for categorical “refusal” labels.
